As for hits - depends entirely on the rink. NYR and MIN are notoriously bad for favouring their home players.

Naslund had something like 11 hits in his last year as a Canuck, and 80 in his first year as a Ranger.... Says it all. - angus

Moulson could be considered an honourable mention, too. I didn't list all of them, just a few. He's a consistent goal scorer, and as I have said I value that very highly.

I don't see Sharp/Vanek falling off. Maybe Hartnell because of his rough playing style. The most likely of the three.

The reason I have Ryan high is I figure he is either traded, or promoted next year if Perry leaves. It was a bit of a hunch on my part.

David - JVR's peak - 35-40 goals, 75-85 points, solid peripherals (low PIM though). - angus

Taylor Hall (2)

If anything, he'll be in the hooskow in two or three years based on that pathetic attempt of a hit on Clutterbuck last night. Unless Hall gets some decent coaching he will be just another kid with speed and nowhere to go with it. Do you think Sharp,Vanek, Hartnell, etc... will fall off dramatically in the next couple years? - Sheepdogged

I also am curious about Moulson, though I agree with davidgoodburn that he doesn't deserve to be on this list. I do think he is seriously undervalued though. I think JVR has found a fit where he can start living up to his potential, which might be better than Ryan in a bad fit. (Not that it is a horrible line or team, but clearly being second fiddle on the Ducks is not doing Ryan credit. Similar to J.Staal in Pittsburgh, to a different extent.) However Ryan in a good fit has to be better than JVR in a good fit. - capretto2002

Great list Angus. Very thoughtful and thought provoking. Two questions: 1) Where do you rank Moulson with these guys. His peripherals aren't good which is likely why he misses but is he close. 2) where do you see JVR's peak? Is he potentially better than Ryan or at least a similar calibre.

Thanks. - davidgoodburn

Angus, really appreciate the information. Is there a top ten list for the remaining positions in the works ? - Grapes

Parise has 0 or 1 hit in 11/15 games.
He does have 3 or 4 hits in 4/15 games. (And three of these are ROAD games!)

It's too small a sample size to judge.
An experienced player like Parise isn't just going to start changing his game and start hitting more. But it is possible that Minnesota's statties are more generous (see Clutterbuck, Cal).

I've actually been meaning to get into HITS and check how they are logged per arena.

As a curious example:
Jay "Mr.82games" Bouwmeester had 69 hits last year.
At Home: 15 Hits
On Road: 54 Hits

(Similar cases in 2010-2011 & 2009-2010.)
Pretty weird, huh? - Pengwin7

@pengwin7 and Kunitz

@P7 - Parise is actually hitting more this season. Currently he's on pace for 98 hits over 82gp. I'm thinking that perhaps the MIN staticians are more generous with hits then NJD?

Kunitz - I like that you included him in honorable mentions. I drafted him in my salary cap keeper and I think he has significantly influenced my standings in that league (1st). Even if his production is tied to Crosby and Malkin he is still a low enough draft pick in most leagues to make it worth the risk of both of them getting injured. I actually used a formula which puts all scoring cats on a scale that allows you to compare them to each other. I found that Kunitz was actually one of the most valuable players by salary and stat production available in that draft (if not the most). - letangerang58

Well, Mr. Sheep, I am picking my players based on future performance. I'm not drafting a team for the past. - angus

Why is he on this list? He has done nothing of consequence. Sure, he's just a kid but ahead of the likes of Sharp, Hartnell, Vanek, etc...? No way. Too much Oil love on this site. - Sheepdogged

This is a pretty good list.
I know we've all soured on Ovechkin, but I still think of Ovechkin as a 70pt player.
And I love, love, love Parise and see him as PPG, 80pt player.

But I'd still rather have Ovechkin with these categories.

Last year (Ovechkin's down year):
Ovechkin: 215 hits, 26 PIM
Parise: 65 hits, 32 PIM

1. Ovechkin dominates Parise in HITS. Dominates. Even if you give Parise a 10% bump in 3-4 other categories... I don't think that difference makes up this category difference.

2. Ovechkin typically gets 50 or 60 PIM. Parise typically gets 20 or 30 PIM (max!).

Points-only for the next 3 years... I take Parise too.
But with HITS/PIM, I think you missed the math on this.

I very much like the rest of the list.
Ballsy pegging Daniel Sedin down to #6 - I still see him as top 3.
And I see that top 3 as ELITE, well ahead of Hall/E.Kane/B.Ryan.

I give you a grade of C on this one. - Pengwin7
