Thanks for sharing the Kerry Fraser response-definitely a good read. I have to admit my initial response to the incident was a little emotional in favor of Hossa, but I would find it hard for Hansen to avoid that situation in real time (slowmo makes it look much worse). And I totally agree on the Keith hit...IMO he should've been suspended for more than 5 games.

I guess it just comes down to consistency. Fraser was quick to point out that worse hits have occurred this year and gone without suspension. Does a player need to get hurt in order for the hit to be taken seriously? Should intent even enter the equation? Can we honestly assess a player's ability to be able to defend himself in a certain situation or whether he put himself in a vulnerable position to begin with? The way that head shots have been dealt with has been inconsistent and messy to say the least--and I don't know that this thorough "Shanahan policing" has really alleviated much. I'm not in favor of guys getting hurt, but hockey is contact sport and concussions naturally follow as a result of some hits. But now people (including myself) get all fired up over hits like the one Brad Stuart laid on Landeskog earlier this year. As an Avs fan, Rob Blake used to crush people like that all the time, and I bet Lando will remember to keep his head up next time. Sucks he got a concussion, but that's the game of hockey. Phew, sorry for the rant... - pbhockey4

fair enough, i retract the dive comment.
hope Hossa is ok.

If want to see an example of a real intentional attempt to injure go back and look at Keith's hit on Sedin.

hawkdog, going back and forth, and now that I watched it on a computer instead of a tiny phone screen, I can see how this might have been unintentional. Definitely tough to tell considering the game happens at full speed and not at slowmo. Not sure why Hansen thought that he could vault over Hossa catch that puck and then be able to do anything with it besides throw it back in the zone--weird play that was unfortunate for Hossa, intent or no intent on Hansen's part.

However, to say Hossa dove is a mistake. Hossa stayed down on the ice, not moving, and left the game after the incident happened at the start of the third. Doesn't really sound like he "embellished" there, considering it was a close game, he had already potted two goals, and both he and his team would've wanted him out on the ice if he could've gotten back in. Not sure if you've ever gotten hit in the back of the head, but that's one of the most dangerous spots (if not THE most dangerous) to get hit in the head. Even little hits to the back of the head can cause some pretty nasty concussions. - pbhockey4

No Pavel Datsyuk goal video?!
Shame.

Good rambling.
Still hoping Desharnais will start pointin' it up, eh?

Granted I watched the video a couple times from my phone, but I have to disagree and say that Hansen's forearm shiver was completely intentional. I don't think the play started off with him thinking "well I'm gonna put the people's elbow through Hossa's head" but he certainly finished off with that sentiment. Have to agree with capretto on this one--hard to imagine Hansen putting that much force into the back of Hossa's head unintentionally. Unless of course it's become commonplace for players to elbow the puck down from the air when it's at head height... - pbhockey4

Sorry- don't know why I typed wrist... meant leg. Oops. (Never post before your first cup o' coffee! :) )
Not saying Hansen is a dirty player by any means. Just pointing out that in consecutive games against the Blackhawks, he'll likely have cost them games played by key players... at what point does reckless become a trend? - Wink

So, I guess Hansen was just being 'reckless' when he slashed Bolland across the wrist last time these two teams played? And Bolland was out the next game? - Wink

This is what the NHL has to take the biggest part of the off season to look at. Their players safety. From a non fantasy stand point, I don't own Karlsson or Hossa, but I do know their offense is good for the league. I'm not a huge Crosby fan, but can't ignore what he does for the game.

It has to be in the back of a players head, "what could I do to this guys if I follow through with this action" just like in everyone else's job. I know this is a split second type of judgement and we shouldn't hinder the game, but we can't approach these guys as a one time use situation until they get hurt in the game and then swap them out.

This is starting to look like Devellano's "cattle" comments taking new light. - Jpappas

Watching it live, I couldn't tell if he made a move for the puck, but Hansen's forearm and elbow drive through the back of Hossa's head with enough force that I do think this was intentional. Maybe he started going for the puck, realized he wasn't going to get it and then his check went high. But even if the forearm was in the back its an elbowing call. Hope Hossa isn't out again, and I'm from Pittsburgh, where we have some reason to dislike him. - capretto2002

I can't imagine anyone actually thinks Hansen's hit was intentional. Reckless, of course, but I highly doubt Hansen expected that outcome. - little_boyes_semin
