Losing is UNacceptable everywhere...

I agree that the young Oilers skaters playing in a negative environment is not good for their development. Quick passes moving the puck up the ice and fancy stick work out of the corners aren't stats in my Fantasy League (yet). Edmonton's youth force needs to be more aggressive in the direction of the opposition's goal. I know they are trying their best every night and every shift but I think faith and patience will win out and so will the Oilers. I don't know any team other than baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates where losing is acceptable. I know that is the case in Edmonton. - BKD

I must disagree. Hemsky, when healthy, is a world-class playmaking winger for Yakupov to play with, while Ryan Smyth, almost 20 years older than these kids and still willing to barrel headfirst into the opposing team's net for a goal, is a fine example of the will it takes to win in the NHL. Horcoff, while expensive, is now a decent 3rd liner, rather than an inadequate top sixer. Gagner is a speedy center who can back up Yaku and Hemsky, who are all guns-blazing offense. Whitney, when healthy, is a very good offensive defenseman who is good insurance should Schultz falter.

Incidentally, if you want to fault a team for not providing their young players with solid veteran depth, then look no further than the New York Islanders. - Isle B.

I was merely speculating, 4. I think a PK for Couturier+ trade would work. PK is a lot better defensively than given credit for - many think he is simply a great skater and an offensive guy.

I think the chicken/egg comment is interesting - Holland had the luxury of Yzerman/Lidstrom when he took over. But I still think signing veterans to make sure the rookies aren't over their head is important. Horcoff, Smyth, and Hemsky are all solid hockey players, but none of the three do much to take pressure off of the young studs.

I still think EDM will emerge largely unscathed because their young talent is so good, but they are going to take a bit longer to get there. - angus

Would Couturier be enough?

Wow...I was really digging the article and had to do a complete double take when I read this. Guess we're on different planets with this one. If Montreal would be looking for more than Couturier in exchange for Subban then I've got my money on Subban staying put.

With regards to the Gillis comments from #14 there's a bit of a chicken/egg argument to be had here. Did Holland employ this strategy because his team was a perennial contender or was the team a perennial contender because he employed this strategy? I tend to subscribe to the first of the two ideas and feel that Vancouver has been in a very similar situation for the past number of years. The prospects are not rushed because they are not needed. It's a very comfortable position for a GM to be in. From all the research I've done into this there is a very clear negative correlation between the amount of ice-time given out to youngsters and the success of the franchise. - 4horsemen

I think the Oilers look pretty darn good so far except for one awful 1st period against the Sharks They gutted out come-from-behind SO and OT wins against the defending President's trophy winners and the defending Stanley Cup champs respectively which would seem to counter any kind of 'culture of losing' environment charge. Instead, I think that, with the arrival and emergence of their five young stars, holdovers like Hemsky, Gagner, Whitney, Smyth, and Horcoff all slot in nicely as secondary players (rather than inferior lynchpins) and suddenly the Oilers have a team that can relentlessly roll 3 lines and keep opposing teams on their heels for big chunks of games. Sure, their goaltending is a question mark and they could use some more depth on D (what team couldn't), but the Oilers are on the right track. There is no need to make any big moves. Drafting Yakupov and signing Schultz WERE the big moves. - Isle B.

I gotta agree with you. Edmonton should focus on filling out their roster with vets. Though I think they may have chosen to wait so they could sign guys cheaper. - letangerang58

Im glad they have Ryan Smyth showing them the ropes. Horcoff too... at least for this year. Id be happy to get more vets, especially on D but I wouldnt be moving the big 4. Let them develop together. - frozenpools

flyers wouldnt part with couturier in a weber deal, no way he gets moved for subban. schenn brothers likely to stay together...if flyers land him, itll be through an offer sheet, but i think montreal will match because the picks they get back will likely suck.

otherwise, good article. i definitely agree about tarasenko. i didn't think he'd succeed at all in st.louis (or at least be able to break 60-70 points) because of all the forward competition. he's making me look like a fool! - praba
