the question of who would you rather own is not very strong. It really comes down to what other players are doing. if 30-40 goals becomes the norm for a first liner, then i may not thing 70 is as impressive.

Every sport has eras where scoring goes up or down. generally we really do not notice it as it happens since it is normally the players playing better D, everyone in the league finally belonging there (watch some old games of any sport and you can always spot the guy who barely plays the sport.... it is the most obvious in the NBA pre 1970), and typiclly small rule changes that add up to a major change.

Hockey is at a low scoring time, the NHL has tried to fight it by limiting goalie pads, but the reality is that goalies have just gotten much better. There is a reason virtually every goalie in the NHL is a hybrid goalie. there are almost no stand up goalies, and only a few general butterfly goalies. The progession of the position has outpaced every other position. Until there is a change to sport, we will very rarely see either of these 2.

I appreciate the feedback. The reason I chose not to mention Orr is that as great as he was, the reality is that nearly everyone who reads this site didn't follow hockey back when he was playing. But perhaps even more importantly, his era simply is not relevant to fantasy hockey today due to there being far fewer teams back then, as well as different rules in place. In order to appeal to the broadest audience and keep things as relevant to fantasy hockey today as possible, I usually don't go back beyond the 1980s.

@MJ - tough question. In the end, I think it's the probably the 30 goal defenseman, since that will be twice as many goals as all but the maybe 5 or 10 other d-men in the league who manage to score 15. But even when a forward gets 70, you tend to see far more than 5-10 forwards who manage to net 35. In other words, a 30 goal defenseman separates himself from the rest of the pack more than a 70 goal forward.

I have to agree with joey

to leave out the greatest player to ever play the game is just silly
If you ask Gretzky who was the best player of all time is his answer is ORR - powerguard18

A story about 30 Goal defensemen and you make no mention of Orr who had 46 one year. And 139 points that season. Not to mention the greatest offensive defensemen in NHL history is in poor taste. - joeygmoney

All things being equal, from a fantasy perspective, would you prefer a 30 goal Dman or a 70 goal FW? - MJ Flex
