I guess my issue is that the players are spinning like they have been taken to the cleaners, and abused by the owners, and this is a complete load of crap... They have been taken to the cleaners, and misled, by their previous representation.

They were told they would never have to accept a cap, if they just were willing to give up a season. Then, they had to accept a cap anyway. This is not the fault of the league, they were pretty clear on what they wanted out of negotiations. The league gave the players pretty much everything else they asked for in those negotiations, in terms of "contract rights" and the players have made out extremely well, better, in fact that many of the owners, in the past 7 years.

But they are crying about how much they gave up last time, and how much they are "giving up" this time, in terms of future revenue, maybe, depending on HRR growth. They are being guaranteed almost 2 BILLION dollars in salaries, every year, split among 700 players, and they are whining...

The owners do not play the game, but they do provide the venue for the players to take advantage of their magnificent skills, and make a fantastic living doing it. The owners also take all of the risks, financially.

Bender, I think there are an awful lot of people in NA who have had their employers do exactly what you suggest, or worse. Those that had the option to move on to another employer with better terms did so, those that did not, well, they just STFU and took it... I am quite prepared for the players to make use of either of those options, although the reality is that option 1 doesn't really exist for any of them.

If my employer, who was paying me wildly more than any other employer in my field, came to me and told me that, although revenues had increased, so had costs, and my employer, as a result, required me to take a pay cut, from, oh, say 10 times what anyone else in my field was being paid, to, well, uh, 9 times what anyone else was being paid, and until I agreed, I wouldn't be working at all, I think I know what I would say.

I trust that answers your question...? - habsrule

Lockout

I keep hearing how unreasonable Fehr is, but what would you say if your employer asked you to take a 12.3% pay cut and then asked you to give up all of your negotiating rights? This after seeing record growth in your industry? Granted, it is being reported that costs have risen dramatically however it seems like the players are willing to get to 50% eventually so to me, this seems like the owners are asking for too much. I kind of hope that the players stick to their guns, otherwise the owners will lock them out again next time and the next time and the next time to see how much they can claw back. The problem is that the high paid players will start to complain because they are losing out on big money that will be unrecoverable. - Bender

Hey golfguy, the players are barely negotiating now, and they are not playing... If they were getting paid, they would still be asking for 57% plus increases... Read up on Fehr's baseball history, he offered the same thing to the MLB owners once, they took him at his word, started the season and then found the players wouldn't really move at all. Then the players declared a strike, when they had the most leverage. The biggest insult is that he would have the balls to try it again, and that fans and media wouldn't call him on it... - habsrule
Actually the players wanted to continue playing but I was the owners that locked them out. If it were up to the players they would be playing and negotiating.
Of course they would. Then Donald Fehr could go and lock them out come playoff time when they've already gotten their salaries. Just like he did in MLB.

You don't go into the season without a CBA and the reason for that is Don Fehr.

Besides, Bettman was willing to start the negotiations last year. The NHLPA declined it - more than once. Why didn't the players play and negotiate a year in advance? Seriously, that's what I want to ask from every player who uses this "we could be playing and negotiating"-card. That's just BS. - Carcillo

In general, I would agree with your HHoF criteria, bt would like to see someone meet the Earth vs Aliens benchmark 2-3 times to qualify. For example, one could argue Quick was the best goalie in the world last year, does that mean he is now considered an automatic HHoF goalie after he retires, even if he never playes to that level again? On the flip side, was Doug Gilmour ever one of the top three forwards in the league - he played in the Gretzky/Lemieux/Yzerman/Jagr/Messier/Hull/Sundin era, and I am not sure he was the number one player on his team on a regular basis, let alone top 3 in the league. He only gets in on body of work (although I maintain that if he had never played in Toronto, he would be a footnote everywhere but Calgary) - nblobstr
