Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

P7, great point about the D core in front of him, I probably should have discussed that more in the article. - Mac Vincent

March and April Numbers

Great column Mac!

I wrote about him in an early column in the off-season.

"On the flip side of the argument, if you breakdown his numbers even further, during the last three campaigns, the last two months (arguably the most important) of the fantasy season (March and April), has seen Miller post a 30-12-5 record along with a dazzling 2.35 GAA and .924 SP. Now those are the types of numbers which help you collate championships."

He's certainly someone I call a half vs. half player. In H2H leagues I target him at Xmas time and try to make a play for him every year. He's the type of goalie that helps you snag championships. In Roto leagues he's probably not a "top 10" all year goalie. I would certainly make a play for him in the 2nd half, but sitting on 2.57 and .915 all year long won't win you championships. 2.25 ad .930 will! - Ryan Ma

Decent piece here. I agree Miller is still a top ten NHL goalie. I think he's a top 3 NHL goalie for this year - but that's just personal opinion.

I wouldn't say Buffalo is really trying to make an attempt to get younger. They swapped Roy (29) for Ott (30) and Kassian (21) for Hodgson (22). Neither really indicative of anything age-related. TI'd say GM Regier probably recognizes they were not simply not solid at center, especially with the failed Leino C-experiment. Gerbe, Ennis, Roy are all under 5'-10", 190 lbs... so it makes sense, IMO, to bring in a gritty 6' Steve Ott who is a proven 2nd line center (which is where I think he'll play).

More importantly, I would've loved to see more focus/discussion on Buffalo's defensemen.
Defensively, I think there was a learning curve for Miller with Ehrhoff coming to town. It takes a while for a goalie to learn to read the movements of his defensemen. Let's go back and look at Miller's best year: Vezina '09-'10 year. For the previous 5 years he consistently watched Henrik Tallinder & Toni Lydman play in front of him. BOTH of those solid D-men left in summer of 2010 and signed elsewhere (NJ & ANA). That completely shuffled BUF's top two D-units, forcing Myers to play with somebody new and introducing Leopold in '10-'11. In '11-'12 they brought in two MORE new defensemen in Ehrhoff & Regehr.

It's always interesting that people talk so often about fantasy hockey goalies without referring to their defensemen, how long they've played together. It's a MAJOR factor in goalie performance.

For 2012-2013, Miller will be playing in his:
4th season with Myers
3rd season with Leopold
2nd season with Ehrhoff
2nd season with Regehr
Each season that BUF can keep this big four in tact will bode well for Miller's statistics. This is the main reason why I think Miller is a great bounce-back candidate. - Pengwin7
