84 points isn't unreasonable.
there is a lot of luck that goes into a players stats each year.

a player has his own skill set, but the coach determines the role each player will have on a team - this influences a players numbers... but pure luck also plays a factor.

saying benn is a PPG player is a good assumption based on his skills and projected role on the team. with a few good breaks during the year, he could get up to 85 points, with a few bad bounces he could drop to 75 points... - InnocentBystander

LOL.....yeah, that 84pts prediction also included a little bit of "hope". I just feel Benn is sometimes underated.....much like Eriksson....must be a Dallas thing. I feel with the new supporting cast (regardless of their age and overpaid salary lol), Dallas is going to put up some #'s this year. I think what will secure his PP1 status besides his play will be the big $ they sign him to. - Jake44

right on P7...
and I can't see any way that Benn doesn't get prime PP minutes.
in my mind, it is a given.
lots of great points brought up and about a dozen other key points have been brought up in the forums in other discussions...
benn is for real, and his time is now. - InnocentBystander

Benn is one of my favourite players to watch.
I think PPG is a pretty elite club and people should really hedge from predicting anybody for 82+pts.

That said, there are some very nice things about Benn that (surprisingly) haven't even been touched on in either the article or comments.

The main thing is how poor the Dallas PP was last year.
Was it Souray? Was Goligoski off-his-game?
Here's the Dallas Stars top PPP for last year:
15: Ribeiro
12: Eriksson
10: Benn
10: Ryder
9: Goligoski
...
6: Souray

The Stars powerplay was absolutely dismal last year. In fact, they finished last in the NHL at 13.5%. Does PP efficiency vary from year-to-year? Yes, yes it does. Nashville, for example, finished last year as the #1 PP team (21.6%). But the previous year they finished 26th (15.2%). I've learned that powerplays can fluctuate wildly year-to-year, so it's best not expecting the NHL's PP leader (Giroux) to put up the same totals as last year. It's also fair to expect the NHL's most dismal PP (Dallas) to improve. Or at very least, you can be sure that they have put a lot of work into correcting it.

Speaking of PPs, I don't care how old players are... PP efficiency is all about "hands" and "vision". That's why Jaromir Jagr was so valuable to that Flyers PP last year and to Giroux's totals. He'll be a big help on that DAL PP.

My big concern for Benn is whether he gets that precious PP1 time.
The top PP unit could be Jagr/Whitney/Eriksson/Goligoski/(other D).
If Benn ends up on PP2, his stats may not rise.
If you told me Benn would be on PP1 all year... oh, I'd peg him for 80pts.

The thing to REALLY like about Benn is the fact that he put up 52 even-strength points in 71 games. 0.73 ppgES. That's better than Giroux, Tavares, and the Sedins. 0.73 ppgES is top 10 in the NHL (I believe).

Anyways - to shorten... these are the kinds of numbers that Forensics should really be exploring when speaking about Benn's potential for further statistical improvement. (moreso than extracting "First Goal against Luongo" from something like wikipedia - which really lends no value towards statistical forensics - sorry, just saying).

Benn also was a complete beast in the 2010 AHL playoffs after 82 games with Dallas. This is important because it shows how well he can quickly adapt to playing with a completely new set of linemates & team. This would have been something good to note as well (though it can't be found on wikipedia).

Overall, decent article - could be much better. - Pengwin7

63 points in 71 games doesn't mean he needs 20 more points to reach PPG status.
it means he needs 9 more points over last year's pace to reach 82 points in 82 games. - InnocentBystander

I dunno, watched him just a few times (had him on my team last year) and reminded me of Nash and Ryan in his highlights. Big guy who could pull off some fancy pull and drags, got a few highlight real goals.

PPG increase is 20 more points. I know he has a lot of hype on this board, but as Ryan said few players get PPG nowadays. - cdubb

doesn't matter who else is on the team, benn is a ppg talent going forward.
morrow, ryder and jagr might drop off, but not benn. no way. no how. - InnocentBystander

Sorry Jake I think you're way over-inflating his point totals...

I'm not saying it can't happen, but when you consider that only 3 players (Malkin, Stamkos, and Giroux) in the ENTIRE NHL posted more than 84 last season, do you really think that Benn has reached that level?

I mean Spezza just hit 84, not Kovalchuk, Kessel, Neal, Tavares, H. Sedin, Elias, Hossa, Whitney, Thornton, Gaborik, Eberle, Kopitar, St. Louis, Pominville, Eriksson, Staal, Moulson, Sharp, Parise, Zetterberg, Hartnell, Iginla, D. Sedin, Seguin or Lupul hit 84 points last season, yet you think Benn will tally that this campaign? - Ryan Ma

Talent isn't the issue with Benn, the biggest thing for me will be depth charts.

18:04 and 2:17 with the Stars last campaign, but if you look at the main competition, he really only had Eriksson (19:45 and 2:38) and Ribeiro (20:02 and 2:51) who really challenged him for ice-time.

If you take a look at the off-season changes. They moved Riberio for Roy, so let's call that an even swap. They added Jagr (16:20 and 3:15), where he's going to eat up a lot of PP time. Whitney (18:38 and 3:46), once again someone who could eat into the PP time. Also you have to consider Morrow possibly getting a bit healthier than last season... Ryder is still a 30-goal threat. Throw in a bit of competition from Eakin, Nystrom, Fiddler and Wandell, I just don't know if there's a lot of room for Benn to improve.

The Stars averaged 2.49 goals per game which is a bit low, so if you say they improve to 2.65, that adds another 13 goals or 39 points to go around, but considering the additions of Jagr and Whitney... Those 39 points could easily be eaten up there instead.

Although I do think that Benn does have the offensive potential to hit point-per-game, with 7 potential 50+ point producers on the team, I don't know if his environment will allow him reach that, I don't think it's even safe to cement him for more than 70...

I'd keep his expectations of improvement in check.

Regardless is Eriksson had 70 with/without Benn is irrelavent. Riberio was known for overstaying on his shift ie cutting into Benn's time playing with players like Eriksson. This year it's all Benn baby!! Benn didn't need Eriksson to win the skills competition last year at the All Star game did he?....lol

Don't get me wrong, Eriksson is awesome....I just think a full season together full time, the duo will be dynamite. Benn 84 pts, Eriksson 76 - Jake44

Nice article again. Just question whether in fact it's Eriksson who helped Benn. I think Louie already has two 70 pt seasons prior to Benn. - cdubb
