That is in a bubble sir. That does not take into account injuries and games played. A more accurate stat would be points per game played. As I stated, Penner is at .54 points per game played.

Number of forwards with greater than .54 points per game played: 151
Number of top 6 forwards in the league: 180
Much closer.

Other guys that are in that same point range
Stalberg - 875K
Brodziak - 2.83MM
Sykora - 650K (2012 salary)
Zubrus - 3.4MM
Bertuzzi - 2.075MM

So it would seem that 3.25MM would be on the higher end of the spectrum......not really a great deal for a player that you are HOPING bounces back to his career statistical norms when a player has seen a significant drop off since being traded to the team he just resigned with.

But that is the beauty of fantasy hockey. Everyone has a different opinion and places different values on players based on their perceived values. - bballplyr321

NHL forwards with more than 45 points last season = 115
Number of top six forwards in the NHL = 6x30 = 180

I'd say that is very adequate production for a top six forward. - angus

Respectfully, Penner was never a solid top 6 contributer. He has had one season in the NHL where he has scored more than 47 points. He has scored .54 points per game for his career. Expecting him to bounce back to his career norm, he would be slated to score around 45 points next season which by all accounts is not all that great for a top 6 forward. Since he has been moved to LA, it seems as though he has not been a good fit at all often times looking out of place and being outplayed by the youngsters on the team. He had to be THE MAN in Edm before he was traded but now that he is no longer counted on, it seems as though he has taken a step back. 3.25MM for 45 points and a lost little puppy is not going to cut it. And at 30 years old, he no longer has that same promise that youth brings. Let me be clear, he is not an OLD player but at 30 years old, you pretty much know what you are going to get out of a player. There are very few guys that blossom into something special this late in their careers.

I would submit, in his place, a player like Wojtek Wolski who scored half the number of points in a third of the games played and signed a contract to play in Washington for less than $1MM. That is an excellent signing and a very good $:Point ratio.

Penner's is based on past performance, though. He has a track record of solid top six production. - angus

Angus, it is fine that he is due a bounce back season but I still don't see how that makes it a good contract. When fans are deciding whether a contract is good value or not they use past performance not what 'could' happen. Otherwise a lot of these bad contracts would be classed as good because of what could happen.
Wideman is the other comparison here and he 'could' come to the flames and set the league on fire banging in points every night, we don't know, we have to use past performance to decide.
You cannot judge one contract on past performance (Wideman) and another on what could happen (Penner)in the future, double standard. - UKflames

I can't see Penned being a good signing. Even if he's due for a bounce back season, that's probably 35ish points. When he got his 30-goal, 60-point season, he was playing top line minutes on a bad team. Now he's at most second line, with less PP than he saw with the Oilers. - newfcollins

It is almost mathematically impossible for Penner to perform as bad as he did last year.

He is "due" for a bounceback season because it is almost mathematically impossible that he struggles continue. - angus

So now Penners' contract is a now considered a good one because he is 'due' a bounce back season?? If I remember correctly everyone was screaming what a terrible contract it was after the points he had been putting up and how he was overpaid.
Seems strange that his contract can be considered in a positive light on a prediction rather than past history, which is the norm. - UKflames
