I dont know what Patrick Maroon did to piss people off so badly, but I wish he didn't. He he a great and cheap forward option for us. PPG player in the AHL. 6'4 225 lbs with a 550k cap hit for this season. - Atomic_Wedgy

Good points Rusty and thanks for adding that piece on Bourdon. Gus is more offensively talented, but you're right in that Bourdon is a physical presence who should be above Manning and Kessel. I would go with either of Gus or Bourdon any day over Lilja. I don't know much about Gervais so I can't really comment there yet. I'm guessing Holmgren makes a move before training camp to bring in a D. - Tim Lucarelli

Though he is currently a RFA, Homer has said publicly that the team and Bourdon expect to come to terms soon. On the organizational depth chart he is above the likes of Kessel and Manning. He and Gus are about on par as the top 2 that the team is looking take the next step towards being regulars in the 4-6 slots eventually. Bourdon is pretty physical and has a pretty hard point shot to boot. These are definitely players that could potentially push aside Gervais and Lilja. Now with the Achilles injury to Meszaros if no trade or signing is made to address that issue they will have even more of an opportunity to show themselves at the nhl level.

Meszaros is now out indefinitely with a torn achilles. Carlo Coliacovo - come on down? Bodes even better for Gustafsson if they don't make any moves. - Ron Burgundy

This has been another brutal offseason for the Flyers so far. Losing Jagr and Carle for nothing and trading JVR for Luke Schenn makes this team look a lot less scary for the 2nd year in a row. In about 13 months they've gone from a true Cup contender to a better version of teams like the Jets and Islanders who will rely on the hoped-for improvement of their young players as the main ingredient for success. - Isle B.

Thanks Bob.

@dime, I agree with what you're saying, but he's going to have to earn his ice time. Beating out Lilja shouldn't be hard at all, and I assume beating out Gervais won't be all that difficult either, but I haven't really seen much of him. The things that would keep him back from making the squad full time are his lack of physicality and the fact that he is an assist-heavy/pass-first type of player, much like Timonen. They might be looking to bring in someone with a big point shot, which would make it even more difficult for Gus. Assuming no moves though, he's got a great shot at sticking in the NHL. He's just gotta earn it.

@Rollie1967, I'm not sold on that Schenn trade at all. Maybe Schenn develops into the guy they need him to be, but I can't for the life of me understand how JVR couldn't garner at least a solid pick or prospect on the return in addition to Schenn. That one could turn out to hurt real quick. In regards to depth, you are right. If any of the big name guys go down for an extended period of time, the replacements will be a bit questionable, which could force Holmgren to make some trades by liquidating some future top-round picks as he's done in the past. It all depends on the situation really, because it could go great if everyone is healthy, or it could go south pretty quickly if they face some serious injuries. Hopefully they stay healthy and develop to the levels of which they are capable. - Tim Lucarelli

when Schenn starts to anchor the 3rd pair on D, they will regret that trade. The top end talent is there- but zero depth, any major injuries and theyre going to fall in the standings big time. Im not sold on Bryzgalov either- but its Philly, he still is an upgrade over what theyve had recently, albeit an expensive one. - Rollie1967

I would pencil in Gustafsson as a top6 guy ahead of Lilja and Gervais. The Flyers are short on puck moving and I believe Grossman + Schenn make Lilja redundant, while I actually think the intent was to play Gervais as a #7. I would actually expect Gustafsson to have a good chance of playing the 2nd PP assuming the existing 1st PP of Roo, Harts, Simmonds up front and Timonen, Voracek on the points is kept intact
