Nashville matching for Weber

Great hockey move by Nashville to keep their star. However...

This is horrible for the ownership's CBA positioning if a have not revenue sharing collector can afford to dole our $26 million over the next year for a player it kind of drives a stake through the argument that players portion of the revenues are too high and salaries are out of control. Also puts a huge dent in the revenue sharing argument for the have nots. Good luck arguing around this one ownership group. - davidgoodburn

Yep, they can't trade him for a year now. If that's a full calendar year or just up until July 1st 2013, that's another story :) - sentium

Mabus - if you're in a 7-year rebuild, why would you max out your salary cap before the team is ready? When the team starts playing .500 hockey - and I don't mean the fake .500, I mean winning as many games as not winning - then spend the money. Spend the money to keep the players you want. The last thing a smart organization should do is build a powerhouse, have the players all come into their own within a two-year span, but have no cap space to keep them.
What if Tavares, Okposo, Strome, Niederreiter, Hamonic, De Haan, Poulin, etc all took big steps forward this year and next year? Currently, the club could afford to re-sign all of them (I know, not JT since he's already signed long term, but just painting a picture) to big raises. But if they were up near the cap ceiling they would be unable to. - Dobber

@Mabus

I remember an NHL team that not too long ago went bankrupt, sold off all of their top players for draft picks, had to make their biggest creditor a co-owner, finished in the bottom 3 of the league for 4 straight seasons, played in a decrepit arena and had little hope of getting a new one, was widely rumored to be moving to another city and could have been bought for a less money than some NHL players' contracts were worth. That franchise is now the marquee team in the league, namely the Pittsburgh Penguins. - Isle B.

Probably the opposite of a bold prediction, but I bet that Visnovsky never plays in a playoff game for the Islanders. There is no way I'd want to be part of an organization that needs Alexi Yashin's contract just to make it to the minimum salary (is that called the cap floor - brain fart). This is a horrible organization that bungles every important decision. It's very though to not turn around a team with consistent top 5 picks, but I'm sure they will find a way. They found a way last time when they had 7 top 5 picks between 1995 and 2000, so anything's possible. I think Columbus is the only organization I'd want to play for less than the Islanders.
