@Aaron

Fleury's season ended in such an awful fashion that if he hadn't won a Stanley Cup a few years ago, he would have been run out of town. Between his last few games of the regular season, which cost the Pens the President's Trophy and his awful playoff series, which cost the Pens a playoff run in an Eastern Conference that was right there for the taking, Fleuy was 3-7 with about an .800 save percentage and GAA approaching 5. Roy was run out of Montreal for less and Luongo is being run out of Vancouver for less. - Isle B.

I would have Luongo a little higher personally... 920 sv% and 2.4 GAA is pretty good and for all this talk of inconsistancy... His SV% numbers for the millenium are, from newest to oldest:
919
928
913
920
917
921
914
931
918
915
920

If that isn't a picture of consistency, I don't know what is.

I think Varlamov, if he can stay healthy, and his team have taken huge steps forward and expect an elite year from him in 2012 - 2013, but I guess that is speculating, then again, Rask and Shcneider, and Luongo being on your list has to be speculating.

I know he only did it for one year, but not having Mike Smith at least as an Honorable Mention is a huge flaw for your list. - bogans

Hey Angus,

I really enjoyed the article and as always, people have different opinions, especially with goalies. In the 2010 goalie list you said "MAF - I simply don't think he's a top 10 goalie. Incredibly inconsistent. Wins games but doesn't do much else" Now you say "one of the best starting goaltenders in the league"

Since then he has posted a 905, 918 and 913 sv % in the regular season and a below 900 sv % in the playoffs. With the Penguins getting worse defensively and a stronger back up goalie who could steal a lot of starts. Why do you feel he is now a top 10 goalie, is it simply because he is on PIT?

I was a big fan of his, but I feel now that he is GREATLY over-rated, he makes some flashy saves, but lets in A LOT of soft goals. His stats are generally below avg (GAA and SV %, Wins are good I'll admit) but what exactly makes him "one of the best starting goaltenders in the league"? - morvintini

Awesome list, Jeff! Just one minor nitpick (you know me...). It's "couldn't care less" not "could care less". It doesn't make any sense to write "could care less" but more and more people write that, distorting the idiom. - sentium

A top ten list with a lot of ?'s for sure. Personally I wouldnt have Bryzgalov anywhere in the top 10, especially with no Pronger,Carle for next season (Gervais isnt gonna help much). Kipper plays on a team going nowhere- but 65-70starts is almost a given. Id have Schneider higher than Rask- but until they move Luongo, his starts arent guaranteed like Rasks. A year ago Thomas,Luongo were at the top of their game- now retired? and looking for a home, how quickly the mighty can fall. - Rollie1967

The ARTICLE I have been waiting for....

well this has really got me thinking. As the owner of Lundqvist and Fleury, I am allowed to keep only 3 from my team, and the league is an auction style draft.

The top goalie in our league was bought for $38. Lundqvist was $33 and Fleury $12. There value increases by $5, so my original thought was to keep Fleury and bid for Lundy (at least $40). From reading this article, it is sounding like Lundy might be the best option and try either bidding low on Fleury or maybe go after someone else on this list.

The guys in my league aren't too educated, but they do over bid on players (Rinne $38 and Bryzgalov $38) - Jpappas

How was Fleury's season terrible Isle B?
42 wins (2nd most)
2.36 GAA (11th best - or 6th best of goalies who started 50 games or more)
.913 Sv% and only 3 shutouts is pretty weak though

Not saying he was the most valuable goalie, just not 'terrible', and he's on a team that should be fairly dominant for a long time, and he's signed for 3 more seasons (with no super-stud prospects in the lurch), so is in a pretty rock solid position.

Love the list, very close to mine except I personally would have Fleury 5th ahead of Miller. Given his poor sv% (career and last season) though, I can understand him being slightly lower. - Aaron27

Wow! Bryzgalov, Fleury and Miller, all coming off of terrible seasons, Schneider and Rask, who have never been #1 goalies, and a man without a team (Luongo) are all in the top 10? Plus the #4 guy (Price) is on a team that finished 28th overall! NHL goalies sure ain't what they used to be! And I can't even say I disagree all that much with this top 10. It is sort of paradoxical that the goaltending position is not exactly in a golden age right now, yet goals scored have still been trending downward since 2005. - Isle B.
