The money for Price is absolutely correct for these reasons:
1. In an age where the salary cap has still not created an even playing field, you need every advantage you can get. Getting Price locked up long term is a public commitment to fans, and more importantly other free agents, that you are trying to win. Nickling and diming a 24 year-old franchise goaltender is not the way to attract other free agents.
2. What advantage is there to negotiating hard with Price? There is absolutely none, trying to save an extra million dollars per year is not worth keeping him happy, especially when you have ~$15 million in cap room before signing him.
3. Although it was a different GM at the time, I'm sure people in the Montreal organization felt some goodwill to Price for accepting a 2 year, 5.5 M (total) contract when he was last a free agent. Everyone regarded that as a discount, but Price took the deal, stated he wanted to be a Canadien, and paid his due.
4. What other option did Bergevin have? Montreal committed to Price when Halak was traded, everyone knows that, including Price and his agent.
5. There are many other teams in the league who would gladly pay that kind of money to him, just ask Howson what he would pay to have Price locked up for 6 years.

Anyways, I think that Montreal fans should be very grateful he is signed, and should have a lot of optimism going forward with the core they are building. This is coming from a Flames fan... - Bender

I think this was a good signing by Montreal and not an overpayment. He is arguably the best at controlling rebounds an moving the puck (besides maybe Brodeur on the latter), his reflexes are by no means elite but he makes up for it with great positioning and lateral movement, you will rarely ever score on him down low or on the first shot. He also uses his frame very well. If you notice most of his rebounds he directs with ease to the corner or side boards where the D can expect to pick it up. Because of these traits he is very dependant on stability in the back end to move his rebounds out of the way and also on his forwards to clear the shooting lanes. If you look at the turnover in D that Montreal had from 2011 to 2012 it is quite significant. Alot of inexperience to say the least. Yet, once the season carried on Price's numbers improved which suggests that the chemestry with his D improved. Post vs Pre all star stats: .914 vs .920, 2.41 vs 2.49, 2 SO in 42GP vs 2 SO in 23GP. I don't really see the habs taking a step back defensively next year (is that possible??) so expect improved #s, now imagine him with Weber and Suter on the back end... - aleco83

"We’re all in fantasy hockey here. We know how hard it is to fill a need. And the more desperate you are to fill that need, the harder it is to fill it. Have you ever been in a roto league where you draft three goalies and your No.1 gets hurt for most of the season, your No.2 has a massive off year and your No.3 gets usurped by an up-and-comer? How easy was it to get a goalie from a fellow GM? And that’s fantasy hockey – imagine how much more difficult it is in reality. Cut your local GM a little slack – if he has a vision that you like, be patient with it." - hawkdog

I'll admit that I'm not nearly as high on Price as Dobber. Not even close. Looking at goalie numbers, you need to look at the stats of the starter compared to the back-up to see the effects of a system vs. effects of the player. The fact is that Price gave you a 0.01 better save percentage, a 0.12 better Goals against average and 0.08 standing points per start over Budaj. Budaj. Yep, the same Budaj people were calling one of the worst back-ups in the league before last season.

Those numbers don't scream out to me - let's take the third highest goaltending cap hit in the league. This was simply an overpayment. - mabus

Don't let Montreal's crappy team undermine Price's worth. His numbers last year were better than Rinne's this year (besides wins, more a team stat). Price is 5 years younger and played without Weber, Suter, Barry Trotz and the rest of the Nashville team. My money is on him having a Vezina within 3 years.

Anyone know of of website that can facilitate bets between total strangers? - shingy

Yes he is, Rollie. On those teams, his numbers would be even better or as good. - Dobber

If Schneider signs for $4mil, dont know how Price ends up with 6.5mil with worse numbers. He may turn out to be the better goalie- but thats a good size overpay if you ask me. He is NOT a Rinne,Quick,Lundqvist yet, and may not get to that level. Whats next Subban signing for slightly less than Doughty and Chara? ugh. liked what Bergevin had done so far (although 1 of Prust and Armstrong wouldve sufficed). - Rollie1967
