is nuttier than a payday bar.
But apparently this isnt some ploy- and as the rules are(IIRC)- although he can take the year off...his cap hit REMAINS! which screws the bruins, this happened before with Vladamir Malakhov, due to contracts being signed after a player turns 35. If the bruins 'suspend' him (and dont pay him a dime) the caphit remains..as does the final year of the contract (basically delaying the completion of the contract). Now the fact the cap may go over $70mil (according to Bettman, and you would think he would have a pretty good idea), then this wont be an issue.
But it does bring up another possibility... for teams that dont want to spend to the cap floor (which will also rise, not sure if its the same amount as the cap ceiling) then they can take on a player like Thomas- and on paper make the floor, while saving $5mil per, while the Bruins get cap space and 1 less headache. Thomas taking a year off at that age- and coming back? very risky- especially if you have to pay him $5mil and hope he hasnt lost it. - Rollie1967

Re: Tim Thomas - does anyone else think this could be posturing to make him untradeable so he doesn't wind up in a bad market? I don't understand why a 38 year old player would take a year off. - immortal_leafs

I don't believe Thomas would sit out. Unless maybe hes traded to Columbus when his no-trade clause expires on/after July 1st. I could see that. I'm hoping he ends up in Tampa Bay. Get Thomas, also bring over Helenius, ship out Garon. Also, I'd sign UFA 22 yr old goaltender Joacim Eriksson, or go after unsigned prospect Frederik Andersen from Carolina.
