I also totally respect the message here. Inspirational content certainly to be found in this column.

"He who paves his own path utilizing his own drive, persistence & natural God-given ability will one day realize the fruits of their labour, regardless of the obstacles presented along the way".

Keep at it pal. I see this empire continuing to gain speed going forward! - Anthony Lancione

Passion + sacrifice of time, energy and money + pushing yourself to follow through NO MATTER WHAT + 2-10 years = success.

Totally inspiring, Dobber. I'll be sharing this article on FB as I think it will resonate with people way outside of the Fantasy Hockey niche. Thanks so much. - NathanZ

If I may ask, at what point in time did you decide to incorporate DobberHockey? Or are you still operating as a sole proprietor? - bluecollar

Great read, boss. This resonates with me as I continue to work my way through different industries.

To do what you love, there is one thing to never forget: create value for others. The more people you create value for, the better your chances of success.

Writing may not be a career for me, but it is an invaluable skill in any industry and my development as a writer/editor thanks to this site has been better than any class I could have taken.

I have written over 300 columns for DobberHockey. My writing sucked at the beginning, and there is still a lot of room for improvement, but that is what makes me want to write more and more. - angus

Most of us know this, but i am sure that we have all been at the bar thinking we should do this... most of us sober up and never think about it again, but for those that try it is worth knowing what you are getting into.

The hard and fast of this is that no one is a full time writer anymore. It is a part time gig at best. There are too many people that know this is well as you that are willing to do it for free. Even for the great dobber, there are guys that know this as well as him, but he was willing to put in the time to build his reputation and then make an attempt to cash out, and reading this, it still seems like he makes maybe 25k a year at this.

I did not realize there was that little money in all of this. I assumed the top end still made a living wage. Basically i will become a fantasy sprots writer when i win the lottery. - notoriousjim

Thanks for sharing this!

I have been working on a business plan for 6 months now, and it is going to be many more (possibly 3 years) before it is complete, but I believe it in, have believed in it for 5 years, and it wasn't until 6 months ago that I finally said enough is enough, I'm going to make this happen.

I am very happy that you shared this, and it shows the same passion as I have read in other books such as "Think and Grow Rich", "The Secret" (which is a bit of a ripoff of the previous book), and any of Jim Rohn's or Og Mandino's books.

Best of luck to everyone who is following their dreams, whether it is in writing or any other avenue of life. - Ross The Boss Palmer

Wow, can I ever relate to this. Your article, and your story really resonate with me. As many would probably see this as very deterring, I found it highly inspirational.

So you are saying the chances of being a fantasy writer is like one in a million.
So what you are saying is there is a chance!
YEAH! Whooooooooo. I hear ya! - Harling

I like your new title on the forums...
I am... your father.

Everybody loves this site.

But perhaps a self-glorifying article about how hard you tried to make it is... unneeded. A little too-much gloating going on here lately Dobbs. Like a true Canadian, keep it humble. Only your wife, kids, and close family & friends need to know how hard you worked to make it where you are.

As a good father... don't brag.
You didn't need to post this column. - Doubting Thomas

Sounds like me! hahaha, but great to see the insight into what's shaped you into the man you are today.

So I'm guessing this is a bad time to ask for a raise? - Ryan Ma
