Your list

Jeff, I don't usually disagree with you on these top-ten lists, but I find myself really debating this one. First of all, Ovechkin needs to stop hitting/running around if he wants to be the explosive player he once was. We see that from time to time, but not always. The number one left winger for me would be Kovalchuk, he's become such a good all around player so he works for his chances now. He never did that while in Atlanta, ever. I'm very much in favor of the Hartnell choice, that's a good call on your part. Hartnell has worked really hard on his game and in the gym, plus he gets the Giroux bump as well. Evander Kane's breakout could've been this year, if he didn't get injured. I like that call, so basically I'm very much disagreeing with Ovechkin as your first overall, but I can understand the other choices you made. Also, if Parise leaves New Jersey, won't Kovy switch to LW?

Again, great work, I just wanted to have a say in all this. - Mac Vincent

Center List

Hi Angus,

Great list like most I was surprised to see Benn so low just because he seems to be a favorite of the writers here.

Also could you post the link for the Top 10 Centre's list I cannot seem to find it on the site.

Thanks. - davidgoodburn

I agree with Pengwin7 about the standard cats. So thank-you for finally specifying what they are because I have never thought of HITS & GWG as standard league statistics.

Thanks for the list. - Ryan

Benn

Very solid list, though I think the order is a bit off.
It doesn't make sense putting Benn at #10 if you think he has 90-100pt potential.

This list should be as simple as this:
If YOU are drafting a team in a new keeper league, in what order do you take these players?

From everything I've read from you, there's no way that the Jeff Angus we know is taking Hartnell or Lucic before Jamie Benn.

BTW. You shouldn't have counted HITS & GWG as standard categories, IMO. I don't think majority of leagues are using those categories.

I'd still give this list a thumbs up.

As always Angus, thanks for the work you do on these lists. Definitely food for thought, even if one doesn't agree 100% with them. Personally, given the league set-up, I don't think I would make any changes to this LW list. The argument against weighting PIM's is futile in my mind, most leagues (all leagues I play in) have PIM's as a category, right or wrong.

Perron, Mueller (maybe) and Cole are certainly not top 10, but guys I think are worthy of fleshing out 2nd line LW slots in a league like this. - Shoeless

Marchand definitely does - has flourished offensively in the past two years

Benn is a favorite of mine - was tough placing the final spots on the list. Thanks for the feedback/discussion. - angus

Great job! Never gonna please everybody. I think Marchand deserves an honorable mention. With the categories listed and his linemates in consideration, he has a lot of value.

There seems to be a lot of players in transition years. Will be interesting to see how guys do next year, with/without a lockout.

I think Ovie's numbers can rebound a bit next year. It seems Hunter has figured out that he is much more effective and efficient by limiting his ice time, allowing him to maintain his explosiveness, and putting him in suitable situations for his skill set. The decrease in minutes played may bring down his hits/pims/shot totals, but it may also bring his goal, assist +/-, PPP and GWG production back up. - Ross The Boss Palmer

Landeskog wouldnt even make my top 10 (yet) and I wouldve probably gone with Sedin or Parise at #1. Making Ovie a captain was a mistake IMHO, you cant have a guy who tends to float defensively as your 'leader', sends the wrong message and I think is part of the reason Boudreau's system didnt work- you cant have the whole team play defensively except your captain whose taking 1min + shifts. Hunter did a better job of limiting Ovie (and Semins) playing time, although the defensive miscues were still there.
Bobby Ryan worries me- if he plays on the 1st line- he's gold- but if Selanne doesnt comeback- that leaves some huge holes after the 1st line, and having Koivu as your #2 center isnt the answer. Unless one of the kids (Palmieri/Holland) is able to contribute early, the Ducks could be in trouble- and Ryan would be a target to be moved. - Rollie1967

Not quite sure why Benn is ranked #10 here. You say he could get between 100-90 points, yet you place him behind Landeskog (who has a 70-80pts upside) and Lucic a 60 pts player. Benn will fill all the harder stats (G,A,GWG,PPP). Stats like HITS,PIM can be easily filled by a player who's strictly a specialist for those (a Clutterbuck type of player).

I am really stunned to see Benn behind Landeskog and Lucic.

Ovechkin

I understand that most people love Ovechkin but he isnt a top 5 LWer in the league let alone a top 5 player(unless hits is your primary category-never). He doesnt work on his game enough. If he is on a team that lets him cherry pick then yes he will score 50 goals. However, most of you seem to think the league is going to a more defensive style so why would you put a guy like Ovechkin at the top of the list?

I respect PIM as a category, but would like to see it broken down (only reward aggression penalties if you want to use it to bring value to those types of players).

I found it interesting that Benn was ranked as low as he was, and exciting to see Kane above Ryan. Im a big fan of Bobby Ryan's, and I wouldn't personally trade Ryan for Kane straight up (points ceiling still goes to Ryan), but I do agree that Kane has made much more progress in his development and would be a fair bet to outperform Ryan. - duducks

PIMs

the vibe I get on the forums is that no one respects PIMs as a cat, and yet most the articles still use PIMs.

I wish you guys would have more PIMless setups in your discussion - its a useless cat, and when Lucic is above Sharp, the list becomes meaningless. - duducks
