Good assessment of the D dot. I live in Niagara and have seen a few Dogs games. He's a clone of Pietrangelo and his development's looking the same, and so is his upside. I'd love to see him and Chara paired up at some time. That'd be a huge (literally) duo to face. - Jon

if you're looking for a nice roto sleeper, you may want to look at Mark Borowiecki. He'll give you about 20-25 points one day, possibly over 100 PIMs, a lot of hits as well. Real nasty up and coming d-man who made the AHL All-Star game in his rookie year. - Big Ev

Thanks. The reason I ask is because Jamie McBain is starting to feel pretty underwhelming in my league that counts a lot of peripherals like PIM, hits and blocked shots. McBain has 2 PIM all year or something like that. Not a lot of hits either. I figure that with a D corps that already has Phaneuf, Letang, Green, Suter, Carlson, Seabrook, Meszaros, Garrison, Hamilton and Schultz I can afford to cut McBain and take Barberio instead. What do you think? We start five daily and I usually carry six or seven guys depending on who's hot or not. The rest get sent down to the farm. - sentium

Actually, Vatanen is closer to 5'11" and 180 pounds now :). - Lukasz

Matt Donovan

I'm curious if Donovan was on your radar at all?

I haven't heard that much about him or seen him play, but from what I was able to find were pretty positive.

He's currently second in scoring on his team in Bridgeport and leading all rookie defensemen in points in the AHL.

Stat-wise, he's destroying de Haan in every category this season.

Any thoughts about him?

Jason, thanks for the heads up. Not sure how I got Deschamps and Gardiner confused. Either way, Vatanen is a guy to watch.

Barberio - Sentium, I have found it tough to get a lot of footage of him in games, but he seems to be willing to drop the mitts (not always a great indicator of physical play, but usually a pretty decent one). - Jeff Angus

Ekholm, not Eckholm. It's not Ecklund either. There are no eckpeople in Sweden :)

Solid list and I'm really intrigued by Barberio. How much of an edge does he play with? - sentium

Nicholas Deschamps is a LW...

Mark Fraser was the D we got from Anahiem recently, but he isn't NHL quality, just a emergancy fill in... more an AHL regular... so Vatanen means little to him...

Unless of course your refering to Jake Gardiner who was traded last year... - Jason Banks

Stefan Elliott in the rough?

If Elliott was number one on the list last year, you can't leave out Brenden Kichton. Epitome of a late round steal, Kichton was selected 127th overall in last year's draft by the NYI. He was passed over in his first draft eligible year in 2010 mostly due to a lack of exposure. This was brought on by being slotted as a 6-7 defensemen on a team with playoff aspirations behind more highly-touted prospects like Jared Cowen (OTT) and Jared Spurgeon (MIN). Even with limited exposure, the Red Wings, or as I like to put it, those guys that can do no wrong at the draft decided to invite the young Kichton to their training camp. Though he was eventually cut, the experience seems to have done wonders to his confidence.

With the graduation of Spurgeon to the NHL and departure of Stefan Ulmer, Spokane's second leading defenseman the previous year who headed back home to Switzerland, Kichton would come back in 2010-2011 with a vengeance. Relishing in the opportunity presented to him, Kichton would end up potting 23 goals and tying WHL Defenseman of the Year, Stefan Elliott, with 81 points. Even more impressive though is that Kichton would post those points in seven less games played and finish off the regular season with an astonishing plus-55. He would go on to post 11pts in 17 playoff games before losing to the star-stacked Portland Winterhawks in the Conference Finals.

The superb season put forth by Kichton would not go unnoticed once again as he went from a draft pass-over the previous year to being selected by the Islanders in the 5th round. Though the offense could not be over-looked anymore (pun intended or not haha), standing at a mere 5'11" was probably his draft kryptonite. None the less, Kichton would find himself on an upcoming team with no apparent heir to the Mark Streit throne. Kichton draws quite a few similarities with Streit as well. Both Streit and Kichton were late round picks, Kichton at 127 and Streit being selected 262nd overall! Both players are undersized defensemen, standing at 5'11" but have shown that when they are relied upon, they will produce. With the departure of out of nowhere standout and Tampa free-agent signing Tyler Johnson, Kichton has shouldered the offence for Spokane this year leading the team, O and D, in pts going a ppg with 68 in 68. In terms of competition on the Island, Calvin De Haan would be the closest thing with his credentials and the amount of stock the Islanders organization has invested in him being a high first-round pick. Last season surprise, Travis Hamonic, looks as though he will be more of a physical presence who can chip in some offense.

Whether he's a flash in the pan or a gem in the ground, he should at least get an honorable mention. Your lists are awesome Angus, this is no slight on you, just thought I'd bring someone up that no one talks too much about. Cheers! - Casey Jones

Always look forward to your articles Angus!

HM - Scott Mayfield. Islander draft pick.

I read an article listing him as a top dman in college hockey. He's got the size (6' 4") and his offense is coming around.

Thoughts? - lcbtd

He was an HM last year. Similar numbers this year compared to last year in the WHL.

He's a great skater but needs to cut get a lot bigger and stronger - still struggles at times with physical play. Should be a good #3/4 d-man in a few years for the Sabres. - Jeff Angus

Just curious as to your opinion on Erik Gustafsson and if he has a chance of cracking Phillys top 6 next year.
