sorry, got cut off!

He may still be one of the best young goalies in the world and the Kings do not want to give him up lightly. But 3 years ago both were in the AHL, JB was the franchise goalie and Quick was an afterthought. 2 years ago JB was a trendy Calder pick. Now Quick is the franchise and JB is backup/potential trade bait. Quick is less than 2.5 years older than 23 yr old Bernier. JB has a losing record this year and unimpressive stats, and is not getting the 25/75 split of starts that was planned coming into the season because he hasn't played well enough for them to rest Quick more this year as planned.

How is all that not a step down?

Is it a step down? He's played really well whenever called upon. Very rare young goalies are stars at a young age.

Bernier is one of the best young goalies in the world. When trading for an unproven asset, it's always a risk. Just like trading for an underachiever who makes almost $8 million per season... - Jeff Angus

@Jeff Angus & Isle B: 2 years ago Bernier was 'the next Patrick Roy' and everybody was calling him a Calder candidate. Now he's John Quick's backup, which is a step down no matter how good Quick is. So I have to think his value has gone down over those 2 years. JJ is still a big name and some think he'll be better than DD but he isn't lighting up the scoresheet and hasn't found consistency on D. Might be a fair trade and from LA's perspective it probably looks like too much, but from CBJ perspective that is a risky package to give up the face of the franchise for. - jacques ouef

That's funny. I think JJ and Bernier would be too much to give up for Nash. JJ straight up for Nash seems like a fair deal to me in a league where mobile defensemen have become the most precious commodity around. - Isle B.

After reading the article, it seems as though this guy is not an NHL fan, all he cares about is basketball. Someone else will have to foot the bill for an NHL team. That may not be easy to find.

Considering the timing of building a stadium and finding someone to finance an NHL team, it looks like they will miss the window where the Coyotes would become available. - Robert Esquire

How long do you expect a rebuild to take? 1 or 2 years? Tambo inherited some bad contracts from Lowe (Horcoff and Penner, which he got a nice return for Penner, imo) and has made one contract mistake (Khabi), imo. I don't see any problem with the Sutton signing, depth/character/veteran guy.

Is he supposed to blow it up again? Rebuilds take time. - Darcy S

I have to think LA would need to give up more than that. Bernier's golden boy status has taken a hit given that this is the second (or third?) season in a row that everybody thought he'd take Quick's job and it hasn't happened yet. JJ has the big name but ya is probably realistically a #3. LA would likely have to add prospects and picks - maybe Loktionov+.

Or they could go another way and trade Richards for Nash - reuniting Richards and Carter in Columbus!;D - jacques ouef

Not sure Columbus need an offensive d-man(Wiz, Moore)- thought they would need a defensive stopper to help shore up a unit that is contains some questionable NHL talent(Johnson, Clitsome) - Pokerface

Well in this case I'm in agreement with you anyways. Complete and utter failure keeps being rewarded in Edmonton and I'm tired of it as well.

I might give you a hard time for your predictable rants on certain issues, but you still do a good job around here. - doulos
