Giroux Contract

Solid, solid piece on Giroux. The full analysis of his game is excellent.

re: Giroux Contract.
Giroux's contract shouldn't be "beyond" you or boggling. He signed a relatively short (3-yr) deal the season after posting. At the time the Flyers had proven scorers Briere ($6.5m), Richards ($5.75m), Carter ($5.3m). At the time, I think many people would have pointed to David Krejci's 3yr @ $3.75m salary as a reasonable comparable. It was fair-market value for Giroux at the time, and the Flyers were probably hoping to get a salary-equivalent-value of something like:
3.00
3.75
4.50
The Flyers just happened to sign him up before he busted out. The Flyers also have that contract terminating with Giroux still in RFA status, which is great value for the Flyers. The downside for the Flyers is that perhaps a longer contract would have been the best value.

re: JVR's contract
JVR's contract is a six-year term @ $4.25m cap hit. The Flyers probably look at that contract and assume the value they get out of JVR will be something like:
3.0
3.5
4.0
4.5*
5.0*
5.5*
*Would the Flyers love to have Giroux at these numbers for a 4th/5th/6th year? You betcha. Signing JVR to this term is possibly a reflection of what they could've had by signing Giroux longer.

If you list the contracts year-by-year... it becomes more evident that the contracts are quite similar. Both players were signed up after 40pt-ish seasons. Giroux had a blazing pace to his 2010-2011 season, JVR had a blazing 2011 playoffs.

If we were able to cut two days in time & play them side-by-side, I think the "gut feeling" we'd all have on both sides would be fairly similar.

Only in retrospect does the Giroux contract seem boggling.
My 2 cents.

Sorry I rambled for so long on the contract issue.
The content of this article was fantastic... I loved it greatly!!!
