Talent in hockey can be equated to school.
The most intelligent student might only get 90% because he doesn't work that hard. (Wellwood)
The best student is someone who works hard and is intelligent. (Most superstars)
Someone who is not that intelligent but who works incredibly hard can also get 90% (Jannik Hansen) - Austin

Talent is the skills/intangibles that you can measure....

Heart, Work ethic, Drive...those things cannot be measured.

You can measure skills/strength/speed. - derek

@Remy

Nino is currently, inexplicably, languishing on the 4th line, playing about 8 minutes a game with the AHL-caliber likes of Pandolfo and Wallace. He will not be doing much this season, but he still shows occasional flashes that make you think he will be a good offensive player in the future, especially if he ever gets to play regularly with Tavares. - Isle B.

What the hell is happening with El Nino ? No point since his return from his injury. Any news about him ? Should I trade him or be patient ? What is its upside ? Thanks. - Remy Belanger

Pengwin: that really is a drastic difference. The difference for kovy is bc he gets double and triple shifted at times so his +- is worse due to him being out there with the 3rd and 4th liners gettig scored on. Then again I think it's more bc of the pp that his +- is worse than the others. Henrique doesn't get 1st line duty and they the devils have given up the most shps this season driving the +- down for those guys. But parise has balanced out bc him and henrique get a ton of shp points themselves. - david

-10 Kovalchuk, 38pts
-2 Parise, 38pts
+9 Henrique, 34pts

Case #403 on why I enjoy studying the plus/minus:
Same line players, play in front of the same D, same goalie, against the same opponent, why the drastic +/- difference?

Things that make you go hmmmmm. - Pengwin7

Yesterdays cage match touched in this topic and relevant here.. how effective would kesler be without the sedins? Same would apply to hodgson but still food for thought. - PD

what is talent?

This has the makings of an interesting debate, perhaps for another forum. What exactly is talent? Is it puck skills, shooting ability, skating ability, vision? Or can physical attributes, such as size, strength, speed make you talented? What about the intangibles, such as leadership, courage, heart, effort? Kesler is arguably the 3rd best player on the Canucks due the intangibles, his strength, speed, and above average offensive abilities too. Hodgson is more talented for the reasons already mentioned. I guess the distinction is between talent and value. Hodgson may be more talented than Kesler, but he certainly isn't more valuable to his team, nor a "better" player than Kesler at this point in their careers. Certainly an interesting distinction. - SeaDawg

He is more talented. He isn't better, though. Kesler is stronger, faster, etc. Hodgson sees the ice at an elite level, and he has a great shot as well.

Wellwood was never even close to being a top three most talented. Most skilled with the puck, maybe. I think there's a difference, but maybe you disagree.

Strong words!

Those are some strong strong words right there! Calling Hodgson more talented then Kesler is a bit premature. Unless you mean it in the way that Kovalev was the most talented player in the league. Semin is likely one of the top 3 most talented players in the league if not the most talented. Wellwood was probably third most talented on the Canucks and probably is the most talented on the Jets. If you mean it like that then sure; otherwise I still think Kesler has him. - Austin
