re: #6. They have already rued that day for years. That is like saying "I may sound like a broken record, but the Red Sox will rue the day they traded Babe Ruth". It's enough already. You don't have to mention that trade every time you talk about McDonagh. - Jammer

Some candidates:

Crosby's return
Ovi's decline
Perry's second half explosion
Nugent-Hopkins bursts on to scene (or EDM's kid line as a whole)
Increasing prevalence of 2-goalie systems
Top draft picks going straight to NHL - angelofharlem

I thought hits were going to replace PIMs as a measure of defensive strength? If not that consider tracking Penalty Kill stats and use that...

As usual, Angus...nice piece o writing....Looking forward to the hockey review... - mike hess

You weren't the only wrong about NYR Jeff, Adam Proteau over at THN had new york ranked 7th and said their defense was suspect.
Yet Henrik had double digit shutouts last year, six straight 30 win seasons and a lifetime save percentage of 919. I bleed blue and am myopic about my team but they get no respect since they changed the battle plan.
They compete, lay on the hits, are entertaining to watch and are getting better. If Staal returns things will improve too. - paul

2. Florida Panthers top line(Versteeg-Weiss-Fleischmann)
3. Minnesota Wild
4. Brian Elliot's solid play in net for the Blues
5. Hockey back in Winnipeg
6. Capitals firing Boudreau and him getting rehired in 2 days(?)
7. Phil Kessel's Hart Trophy like play.
8. Ovechkin cant find his game
9. Bruins 12-0-1 November
10. TB Philly stand around. - derek

Another excellent 15 Points Angus! One of my favorite articles to read each month.

As far as the PIM discussion goes I have two views on this that I'd love to try one day:

First one is obvious and that's to reward penalties drawn as opposed to PIM. That way fighting majors are still a good thing (since you're drawing 5 PIM). I know this stat is tracked because I heard that Hall led the league in penalties drawn at some point last season.

The second one is kind of like what another poster was talking about with the whole +/- stat. I'd like to reward PIM like usual however if a PP goal is scored while the player is in the box than he loses something like 5 PIM. Or maybe receives a minus 1. Adds a bit more risk to it I suppose and makes it more realistic. Normally a player will take a penalty to negate a scoring chance but there's always the risk a PP goal will be scored. Hopefully this makes sense?

Anyways, just my thoughts. - MrQuacky
