Gardiner isn't a 2011 pick so is not subject to the 9 game rule. If he goes down it will be to the Marlies. Earlier in the season I thought he needed to work on his defence and I thought sending him down would be a good idea. Cody Franson hasn't played well and I think will be the first defenceman sent down. I think Gardiner is probably here to stay. He was +2 with an assist in Toronto's 6-2 loss to Boston. He's going to see more ice time rather than less. - Stuart McDonald

He hasn't been playing in the top 6, don't know where you are getting that idea from. The top 6 jobs belong to Giroux and Briere clearly and he hasn't been on either players wing (JvR/Jagr with Giroux, Simmonds/Vorcaek with Briere). He has mostly been skating on line 3 with Hartnell but has been dropped to line 4 now that Schenn has been recalled. If an injury were to occur he or schenn would be elevated into the top 6, I'd still guess it would be Schenn due to the fact below:

Courturier is leading the team in PK TOI/Game though. He is seeing about 5+ minutes on the penalty kill per game. His role is more defensive, which is why he is sticking. If he couldn't play D he would be in junior right now. His value to the team this year is in this role, not an offensive one. - Rusty Pickles
