roy vs koivu is perhaps *the* classic decision i've had to face in at least three pools every year for the last few years; it will simply never abate. roy's the #1 centre on a suddenly good team suddenly with offensive dmen and good wingers? hmm. well, koivu has two linemates this season after his usual total of zero. i'd probably go with roy in most situations this year, though - making things easier is koivu's sudden enormous salary, for those sorts of pools. . . . - Noam

Just a note, Ennis and Gerbe have not played center since turning pro in the AHL so they will be no competition to Roy. Boyes only played center last year when they only had 1 natural center left on the roster, and he was not very good at it so they definitely want to keep him on the wing (actually looks like he'll be starting on the 4th line). Their lines right now are shaping up to look like this:

Vanek-Roy-Pominville
Ennis-Leino-Stafford
Gerbe-Gaustad-Kaleta
McCormick-Ellis-Boyes

@Rabid Jack - that analysis in reality took about 30 seconds - guys like MD get so steeped in relevant data before the draft that it really does happen that fast and it is only in the post mortem that you can spell out how the decision was made. As Horrorfan indicated I took Roy just ahead of him taking Koivu in the 8th round of our draft - I went for the goals edge which I needed more than the FOW because I had bulked up on FOW in Zetts, Backes and Carter off the wings, earlier in the draft. I knew those comparisons without looking - so it was a relatively easy decision. Besides the HPG Draft Guru was screaming at me to get more goals in my roster. - Shoeless

Wow, how long do you guys get to draft each round? That's some in-depth analysis to make on the fly... it's all I can do to look up 2 guys real quickly in the Guide before I pick. :)

I was faced with a similar choice in a draft last night, and also opted for Roy. I don't consider him a band-aid boy, and think he's a solid bet for 75-80 points this year. - Rabid Jack

I had a similar choice in one of my drafts between Roy and a couple of the others, and also opted for Roy. I don't consider him a band-aid boy, and think he'll put up a solid 75-80 points this year. - Rabid Jack

:D loved this piece.

There is definitely that string of centermen that you could close your eyes, point, draft and be satisfied with. Of that tier, I definitely like Roy and Koivu.

I believe I took Koivu eight or so picks after your selection of Roy, and I would have done the same had you picked Mikko first.

What's more impressive is that you got Plekanec (in that same group of 2nd tier of C's) a couple rounds later. That was a great bargain when compared to where all the other similar range guys went.

I gotta say though, even if the preseason is worth as much as throwing a lucky penny into a wishing well, that Koivu and Heatley (and Setoguchi too) have looked good so far. 13 points combined in their last two games played. Crossing my fingers for that carries over into when it actually matters!

All in all, great report Steve!

Best,

To add to that, in a league that takes FOWs into consideration, Koivu's value probably increases somewhat in relation to Roy's. Roy's definitely an underachiever in the circle, whereas Koivu is one of the best FOW centres in the league.

Nice writeup Steve, thanks. Funny in my new roto league with Dobber members only, going into round eight I knew I was planning on picking up a centre, and the two guys to decide upon were Roy and Koivu. However, in our league we have faceoffs won so I was convinced in picking up Koivu due to his usual strength there. Shoeless ended up picking Roy immediately before me and of course I snagged Koivu.

But without FOW, I can understand going for Roy as well. - horrorfan
