We use CBS which is good for keepers because it keeps all the stats from year to year, but not enough stats. I put together a 20 page record book each fall...extra work but it makes the summer go by a little quicker ;D.

I agree with Draft Dodger. Looking for loopholes before an owner does can save you a lot of trouble down the road. I'm always talking rules with a couple of the guys in the league and trying to find ways around the rules so that I can close up any loopholes. - Greg Donnelly

So, this is Glen's wife. I love my husband. He is a wonderful husband and father. But this whole thing is kind of weird.

Most frequent question I ask - is this fun for you? really?

Apparently, yes.

And I'm happy for all of you. Have fun, go crazy, be as creative as you want... just don't forget visit us in the real world from time to time. - Glen's Wife

Superchief: That's rough. I like running leagues as a democracy to some extent, but it's tough to let guys vote on every rule. When I set up my league, I developed the rules for the league before inviting anyone to join. Everyone knew what the rules were before signing up.

Our rules stipulate that any rule change needs 75% approval. If it's set at 50%, I find that most rule votes end up being split between the strong teams vs. weak teams, with everyone voting in their own self interest.

So, each off-season I invite all owners to submit any rule changes that they'd like to see, along with an explanation as to why they think it would be an improvement. Then we vote on all proposals, and anything that gets 75% support passes. We've passed 1-2 rule changes every season over the past 4 years. It's worked well and I think everyone is more or less content with the rules.

I hope your next experience as commish is a more positive one! - angelofharlem

I was commissioner in a CBS league but I let the owners dictate, by discussing and voting, what rules would and would not become law.
I ended up defending the rules, putting together a schedule that no one cared about, writing stories and handing out awards that no one cared about.

I left my bruised and battered league this year and will take the year off to devise a new league for me to run.:) - Superchief

Ha ha Shoeless - whatever floats your boat! Nothing against "lunch pail" poolies by any means; that all sounds like great fun too! I realize the stuff I do is over the top and not for everyone. - angelofharlem

Hey Glen - do you know the difference between white collar elitist fantasy hockeyists and the lunch pail GM's? We run our drafts at Hooters, spill beer on our 1 page draft list, finish the draft in the clink and play sniff and snort golf the next morning. On the 19th hole we draw straws to see who has to be commissioner for the next year - kinda like being a designated driver. - Shoeless

acfurino - Nice website! I love the championship banners across the top - may need to steal that idea from you. The awards show play-by-play is awesome... love that you have an award for top trash talker! That's one thing that's a bit lacking in my league, I think... the guys are all too nice perhaps! - angelofharlem

We have The Ultimate League. It's called the Buffalo Hockey League and has been running since 1988. Real rules, a trophy, and player contracts with actual cash, a cap on the team, and annual salary increases, Equalization Drafts, etc. I've been the Commissioner for the past 5 years.

This beats the typical roto league by light years. - Robert Esquire

Very nice Glen!

I always loved this article. In my collection of rough drafts, I had started a report that would have extended off this piece. I'll be in contact with you and I'll share with you what I had started.

There is little doubt that this will be a great series on DobberHockey.

Best,
Gates - GMGates

Rule scenario

Completely agree on how important it is to think of all the rule scenarios. What we did when starting was also think hard about loopholes, or how somebody may try and get around the rules and/or the spirit of the pool for their own benefit. Unfortunately some owners/GM's may be a tempted to go around the rules.

Thanks Glen, you've inspired me to look into getting a professional looking oage done for my league. I already had the trophy, although unfortunately, it was a bit more than $25.

Great Piece, as a commish I look forward to seeing more. - Killer67
