I was going to take a chance on Nabokov, but you make a great argument. Who would you go with as a secondary tier goalie? Schneider, Enroth, Bernier, Rask or Dubniak EDmon.(sp). Wins, GAA, and Spct. are our stats.

Thanks, - mjlees

Great article. I have both Carlson and Big "fat" Buf in a few of my keepers. I have both cheap so can't dump them. Maybe try to sell high on Buf before season starts and trade him. Carlson I think will over come the odds and score even being 3rd on depth chart. Green is becoming a band aid boy so Carlson will get his chance. Even if Green stays healthy, Hammer and Carlson will make things happen as a second pairing. After Semin was called out and only got a renew contract, he'll be trying to get the big money so there will be a lot of scoring in WASH. Carlson for 45, book it. - mjlees

He's been called "free of concussion symptoms" last I checked (about a week ago).

He still did miss a year and has to get back into shape, but at the least he's only limited by how fast he can get back into game shape rather then concussion symptoms. - Nights

Bogo + Bailey

Bailey may already have been passed by younger prospects on the team and may no longer be in the Isles plans.

Bogo is looking for too much money at the moment. You get paid based on your performance and he hasn't shown that he is worth the big bucks, yet. - Rad64

Carlson is at the least #2 on the Caps' depth chart behind only Green. In fact, Carlson and Alzner form the Caps' top pair at even strength whether Green is hurt or not. Wideman is a 3rd pairing defenseman on this team when everyone is healthy. Green will get the power play time. No other d-man will get a lot of quality power play time because Green and Ovechkin man the points for the full 2 minutes when things are clicking. All said, Carlson is a good bet to at least equal what he did last season.

Parenteau is not a good bet, but not because Okposo or Grabner will take his place, as those two will almost certainly be the wings on the 2nd line. Parenteau's spot is likely more vulnerable to Niederreiter, Rolston or, a real darkhorse candidate for this season, Strome.

Marc Staal is what he is- a 25- 30 point defenseman who can score some goals. He'll play a lot and he'll stay in the lineup but he won't be anything flashy numbers-wise and can't see why anyone would think otherwise. I don't see why he would even be on a list like this.

Not a lot of people have done well betting against Big Buf so far in his career. His former teammate was infamously arrested in an offseason drunken altercation and he went on to score the Cup-winner about 9 months later. - Isle B.

I'll take Buff's 350 shots, 100 PIMs, 150 Hits, 20 goals and 40 points then and check back with everyone in the spring. Fat or not, he's still gonna shoot, hit and take penalties and even with a downgrade of 13 points he's still golden. ;) - Scot MacDonald

@ Scot, thanks! I have been wrong about Byfuglien before, but I'm sticking to my guns here. Not going to draft him.

@pengwin, wow...when pengwin is in the mood to debate and you leave him with nothing to say...that's a big deal! ;)

Rook/DY/Gates, thanks fellas. I ended up having to take Leopold in the Experts draft, but I did select him after Gragnani. There wasn't much left available so at least I got him late.

@guy, nice. I forgot about what Angus wrote.

@Dukla, Wideman has gotten a bad rap, but he's been in the league longer, is only 28 years old, and scored 7 points in 14 games when he dressed in WSH. He also saw more ice time per game (granted it was only 14 games). If I were an NHL coach, I'd give that responsibility to Wideman before Carlson, though it's certainly possible Wideman could lose the job over time. - Tim Lucarelli

Carlson behind Wideman? Not likely. There is only 1 d-man on the top unit usually. Carlson is already better offensively than Wideman. - DuklaNation

@Scot MacDonald: I'm not sure about that... did you see his mug shots? Specifically the second chin he's working on, and the fold in the back of his neck? Check out Angus' 15 Points to Consider for September, in which he mentions Buff's struggles with weight (playing at 280 in junior) and motivation.

Even without that consideration, he was nowhere near as good in the second half last year as in the first. I would pass on him for sure if drafting tomorrow. - Guy Incognito

Good article, Dobber. I agree with about 99% of this with the exception of Byfuglien. I for one am not taking the report of Buff's weight gain too seriously. After all, it comes from a beatnick reporter who is relying on a police report. The cop could have had a dozen Tim Horton donuts and his left foot sitting on the scale for all we know. While troubling, Buff's extended value comes largely from the shots on goal, PIMs, and goals scored. Even with a 25% decrease in points, he's still full value in many formats. - Scot MacDonald
