Jeff...good article as usual. On the defense side I need some clarification. It seems that we are getting more and more offensive defense personnel every year. I have gone from one 40pt+ D man to 2 or 3 this year; fantasy hockey does not value good defensive D men very much if they don't put up points. A great Defense requires both Defensive and Offensive D men; I am not sure young has anything to do with it. It is about the pairings that seems to matter the most as I watch this year better pairings being done around the league. - mike hess

Just in case anyone cares about my opinion, I fully agree with Angus' comment that Yakupov is likely the best prospect since Crosby. He's definitely better than Tavares, Hall and I have watched both Yakupov and Stamkos in Sarnia and he's better than #91 was.

He's going to be an elite talent gentlemen. Take that from a guy who has watched a lot fo OHL action and a ton of Yakupov. He's got everything you want in a player. Fantastic skater (Bure-like), elusiveness (Datsyuk-like), a ridiculous shot (Kovalchuk-like) and plays the game hard and passionately (Ovechkin-like). Yakupov is a dandy and as a winger who scores at will, shoots a ton, has great playmaking abilities and loves to hit. He will be GOLD in fantasy leagues rewarding those skills. - Dean Youngblood

thanks jeff, perhaps its semantics but I still disagree

NYR was 5th in the league last year in goals against

10th on the PK

9th in goals against while 5 on 5 play

potential ? hardly...

"proven" is a better word

I like "improving" more

or "established"

potential implies unproven which as stated above is NOT the case

Awesome discussion. I thought of the travel and how VCR/CGY already face it, but they as an organization and a team are used to it. I think there are kinks that the Jets will have to iron out in the first year. - Jeff Angus

Jets Schedule

I believe the Jets may resemble Atlanta last season. Great start with the hype surrounding the new team, but the travel schedule and lack of talent will prevail.

Sell your Jets players early in the season.

i don't buy this schedule argument. is it that different from Dallas? Vancouver? Minnesota?

sure, distance is further. but for all of their divisional and conference games they're travelling a max of 1 timezone. and its the timezones, not the miles, that kill you with air travel.

no, they'll finish last because they have a terrible roster. seriously, one of the worst i've seen. who is their R2 to start? Thorburn? - ultrawhiteness

Great 15 Points: A few Agree/Disagrees

Agree on:
#2. Byfuglien. I think we'll see the lack of motivation this season.
#3. Steve Ott. We'll see how Glen-Gulu use him... but Crawford gave him big C responsibility down the stretch last year.
#7. Rich Peverley. A nice player - good hockey sense.
#12. Winnipeg Jets. Not just the travel schedule, but the all-around adjustment & temporary living arrangements for some of them will show their effects.
#14. Landeskog. Seems like one of the few rookies who is being tabbed for potential top six playing time this season.

Disagree on:
#5. Doan might move, but Schneider isn't going anywhere until the summer. The Canucks will receive best value based on his RFA status - and a player rental for a month + playoffs doesn't equal what they'll get if somebody tenders him at say $3m/year (high round draft picks).
#11. While I see the cap space the Wings are opening up, they are still a very European flavoured team and I think they are more likely to open up the purse strings for a Vokoun/Rinne and/or Alex Semin/Ales Hemsky. I like Shea Weber to NYR & Parise to MIN.
#15. Patrik Berglund. Mmmmm, I don't know... I'll tab him for 57pts (just +5 over last year). I was unimpressed by his 35 even-strength points last year. Additionally, he played with Chris Stewart down the stretch while Stewart shot an insane 22.4% during his short 26 game stint with St.Louis. Berglund had a nice 17 PPP total last year. But I don't see him eclipsing more than 25 PPP. (which would have brought him to 60 points last year). Berglund is going to have to really click at even-strength to have a "break-out year". When I pick a guy for a breakout year - I'm more apt to look for a guy who has been doing it even-strength but who had very few PPP (Eriksson 56 ESP/12PPP 2009-2010, Bobby Ryan 60ESP/10PPP 2010-2011).

Overall, one of my favourite 15 points of the year.
Great job as always! - Pengwin7

General McScrubs: Why do you have Stamkos ahead of Yakupov? Of course that may well end up being the case, but so far we have Yakupov breaking Stamkos' Sarnia Sting rookie goal and point records, despite the team being all-around brutal as a whole and scoring 28 fewer goals than Stamkos' year. Not a lot to go on, but in watching some video of him, he also appears to be a more dynamic skater and stick-handler than Tavares, and a more physical winger than Stamkos, while possessing similar scoring punch to either of them. Admittedly just early impressions.

paul: The author didn't say the Rangers wouldn't improve. He also didn't criticize their defence in comparison to rebuilding teams like Toronto and Ottawa (who should have young defences because their windows are 3+ years down the road). He simply remarked that they have a young defensive corps for a team that aspires to win the cup NOW. - Guy Incognito

James - yes, the Rangers defense is inexperienced. After Staal/Gigardi - McDonagh, Del Zotto, Erixon, and Sauer are all inexperienced. That is 4 of 6.

Paul - I didn't say anything negative regarding them. It has the potential to be a good group. They also have the best goalie in the world behind them. - Jeff Angus

The Rangers just can't win can they ?

first the critics from such lofty places as THN say they spent too much on free agency and tried to buy a championship.

now is jeff saying NY has developed too many youngsters ?

wow talk about no respect. I can only imagine the love if it were montreal with a 27 year old elder statesmen on the blueline or Toronto or Ottawa for that matter.

How old are their blueliners ? Spacek is 37 but he is a Hab so its good. God help us if he were a ranger and they were trying to buy a championship :) Gee Gonchar is 37 too. At least the leafs don't have too many graybeards back there. Hats off Leafs your lads are lacking enough experience yeh ?

Here is why NY will be fine

They were a top 10 defensive team with one of the youngest teams in the NHL.
Lundqvist posted yet another 30 win season and impressive numbers across the board.
The forwards are deeper and will be improved from last season

All the core players are either in their prime or entering it

The defense will be BETTER this year

not younger

and not bought on the UFA market like the Panthers, Capitals, Lightning, Hurricanes, Blue Jackets and the Sabres

I love your stories Angus and really appreciate your posting them on dobber.

But mark my words NY will be improved - paul

#8- I couldn't agree more. In a 14 team 25 pro 25 farm full keeper salary cap league I traded Backstrom(caps) for what projects to be the top 2 picks in this years draft(one being my own) and I took a lot of heat for it, a few went as far as to call it the worst deal they'd ever seen. It could blow up in my face if I lose the lotto, but I was also not loving the idea of not competing in a season where I didn't have my own first. I was happy about the deal at the time and am loving it more with every highlight I see of Yakupov from the Roberts camp. - MrBlack

is pretty not young. in terms of experience at least. girardi and staal are both entering their 5th full seasons. mcdonagh and sauer are young though, along with erixon coming up as the sixth.

The penguins have a decently young d as well. - James

I don't think Yakupov has been or ever will be as good as John Tavares. Remember, Tavares was a phenom and broke a ton of records in junior. Hyped since he was a kid. Also, Stamkos i'd have to rank ahead of him too. I'd have 1) Tavares 2) Stamkos 3) Yakupov. - General McScrubs
