I think EJ would have been a good option for this list...highly regarded D-man who really struggled last year, got traded and has an uncertain future, but still has tremendous talent. - GB

For starters, many of the guys on this list had relatively little value before this year began: Bolland, Beleskey, Moss, Parse. So, calling this a list of "undervalued" players is a bit odd. I'd say Spezza, Lecavalier, Alfredsson, Cammalleri, McDonald, and Malkin are all better candidates that you didn't even give an honorable mention to.

Secondly, a lot of the guys you went with aren't the type I'd be comfortable calling "veterans", even if they aren't rookies anymore. Let's put it this way: if you're comfortable putting Parse, Beleskey, Stewart, Oshie, or O'Reilly into this category, you might as well be including Hall, Eberle, Gagner, Brassard & Doughty...

Third, where is Malkin on this list? You start off the article by alluding to "the big three of Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, or Steven Stamkos". That should be enough to suggest that Malkin's value has declined. If you're not including him here, should I take this to mean that you don't think he'll return to form this year?

RE: Sharp

Yeah that's the thing, I think the line of Sharp, Toews and Kane are dynamite, which is why if I were coach I'd keep them together instead of trying to spread the eggs over a few different baskets.

Bolland is perfectly capable of handling the 2nd line C gig, so why not give him a shot with Hossa and a permanent line mate like Brunette or Frolik and let them work out the kinks themselves. If you shift Sharp down the the second line with Hossa, then Bolland down to center the third line of say Bickell and Carcillo, then you kinda have 3 makeshift lines that are decent, but not great...

But then again I'm not an NHL coach... - Ryan Ma

RE: Sheppard

Honestly the pedigree is there for him to succeed in the NHL. The thing is SJ does a great job developing their young talent. Every year there's always a surprise, starting from Cheechoo in 2005, Michalek in 2006, Seto in 2008, Clowe in 2009 and Couture last season... So I mean they generally produce 1 out of the blue player each year. With band-aid boys like Havlat, Pavelski, and Clowe, it wouldn't be surprising to see Sheppard get a shot at a top-six gig throughout the year. - Ryan Ma

To clarify, Patrick Sharp centered the 2nd line for the majority of last season, and Bolland centered the 3rd. I know frozenpool shows the majority of Sharp's icetime with Toews and Kane, that's due to a couple stretches during the year he played with them. The rest of the season, Sharp played with a hodge-podge of players on the 2nd line. All of those 2, 3, and 4%s with the other players add up.

That being said, I think Bolland could make a very good 2C. He did play there for a stretch while Sharp was up on the 1st line, and Bolly and Hossa put up some very good numbers together. But Bolland is too valuable as a checking center right now to move to the 2nd line. Quennville himself has even said that in the recent past. - Seth

Forget Me Not - James Sheppard

This is a great list! It's funny to think about how many other guys that could be listed for the west, and then the east (when that list is posted).

I would really like to see Sheppard succeed point wise in San Jose (that's for you Andy Macaloney!), but I really feel his worth on the team will be pretty strict to that of a third line checking center. Being successful in that role, of course, will greatly aid their top 6 in focusing on offense. Not to say he doesn't have the offensive talent to get a glimpse in the top 6, but I think he will form some good third line chemistry and cement his role in their game strategy there.

Thanks for all the great articles! - Ross The Boss Palmer

RE: Ballard

Ballard has a good shot as well, but I didn't think 3 players from the same team playing the same position should muddy the picture... With Ehrhoff gone, everyone kinda benefits from the extra ice-time. It's just that I think Edler and Salo get the bulk of it as opposed to Ballard. - Ryan Ma

I'm gonna be that homer and say Lupul. I like what I saw from him when he played for the Leafs, he changed the dynamics and brought some energy much like Dion did. If he can stay healthy, I don't see why he doesn't put up 50 pts and possibly flirts with the 60 pt mark. Most likely though 60 games 35-40pts? Maybe that's optimistic. - Hockey Hoser
