@ Hurtball - it's a fair question. It's important to keep in mind that the HPG tools aren't just for the draft, but resources you can use to get an edge through your whole season. The Draft Guru gives you an edge at the draft table, and can be used in conjunction with the Team Evalution Tool to give you insight on how to improve your team as the season unfolds. The Trade Analyzer helps make sure you stay on the right side of your trades. The annual subscription works out to less than two bucks a month over the course of a season, which we think is more than reasonable to get a serious edge in your league.

But please don't take our word for it -- give the free trial a whirl to see for yourself.

All the best

Kevin - the lists are indeed weighted by position. Taking PPP as an example, it wouldn't be particularly useful just to give you a list ranked by most PPP to least PPP. Instead, the lists are ranked by individual HPG stat value, which isn't currently displayed (we are thinking about adding the individual HPG stat value to the display in addition to the overall HPG value, which is already displayed).

This individual HPG stat value takes into account position, the number of taken players in the league, etc., just like the overall rankings. Because Mike Richards is a C, his 31 PPP aren't nearly as impressive as, say, Visnovsky's 30 PPP, since there are presumably more centres with lots of PPP than there are defenseman. Essentially we're telling you which player presents the best relative value for each category.

I hope that answers your question. If you still have questions, email me at jamie@hockeypolgeek.com and I'd be happy to help. - Jamie Nay

Why is M. Richards at 12th on your PPP list above

If we click on best available by stat, should it not give us the top projected player for that stat. In the PPP example above Richard is at 12th w 31 proj points should he not be first on that list? If it is weighted by position then D-men are going to rule a few categories G, SOG, and PPP especially when the draft thins the ranks. - Kevin Manson

Claudio - the short answer is no, we don't take age into account as a contributing factor to player value.

We don't do this because we base our tools on the statistics/projections that you choose to use (or import yourself). So, for example, if you use Dobber's projections, he already takes age, upside, etc. into account when making his draft list. We're providing tools that turns that draft list into something meaningful for your league's parameters. We can't start introducing our own age modifiers (for example) into our calculations, since effective age is a subjective matter.

Basically, we provide you with what we think is solid advice based on your league's parameters and the statistics you use as the basis for your rankings. But it's up to you to take that advice and combine it with factors that are important to you (age, the availability of certain players, injury risk, etc.).

I hope that answers your question. You can always email me at jamie@hockeypoolgeek.com if you have more questions. - Jamie Nay

Just to follow up on what I told Jeremy, there's now a "Draft Guru" option in the "View League Details" dropdown toolbar that appears for an individual league. - Jamie Nay

Thanks Jamie.

But besides salary does it take into account age then? Iginla to Tavares example once more. - Claudio

Hi Claudio - salary cap support is on our list, but unfortunately won't be done before the start of the season. We're getting quite a few requests for salary support, so we will bring it in, but it's pretty complex and will take us a little while. - Jamie Nay

Hi Jer - the draft guru is being added to the league toolbar today, but you can already access it by visiting the homepage for any one of your leagues. - Jamie Nay

Salaries

This seems awesome and I will likely purchase it very soon.

I was just wondering if there was a way to integrate salaries.

Example I am in a brand new 14 team keeper with salaries. Now in round 3 for example would it tell me to draft a guy like Jarome Iginla who's expensive or a John Tavares who is almost as good at a much cheaper price?

My pool is $300.00 a team, plus 10$ for each trade you make so a $20.00 tool could be very useful. - Claudio

I developed a tool very similar to this for myself in excel that i have used for the last few years while drafting and it greatly improved my draft results. I used to be very poor at drafting but made up for it with trades and know i have been able to start off on a better foot and not get behind the 8 ball. Having a tool like this available online would be a huge asset to anyone involved in a draft, it basically comes down to trusting your projections and following along. I for one am very excited to see this tool available and will enjoy it over my messy and very crowded excel sheet!
I guess what i am trying to say is that you won't believe the improvements you will see in your draft results until you use this tool! - Chinny

The site/tools aren't going to guarantee you win, but they will help immensely. I don't really play hockey pools strictly for the money (is it really worth it considering the time you spend on it) - it is more of a pleasure/bragging rights type of thing.

Also, the subscription fee isn't all that much if you are in more than one money league. - Jeff Angus

Looks like very cool feature, but ...

Anyone here use HPG last year and can vouch for it's worth? $20 is steep IMHO. My pool entry is only $30 ... $10 for guide then another $20 for website tools ... unless I'm guaranteed first or second place I really can't justify the expenses for what my pool is worth.

That said, I'm still going to try the 24hr trial ... maybe it is worth it? - Hurtball
