@fzusher

FYI, Henrik Samuelsson will be playing for MODO in Sweden next year. Not that that changes anything about him being North American or not. - Big Ev

Just out of curiosity, what source(s) do you have for Grigorenko making the move to Quebec? I've only heard rumours of it, nothing actually in-stone. - studley49

I believe Henrik Samuelsson is effectively North American. He's in the US development program. He was born in Leksand, but grew up in the US. His brother Phillip (Penguins 2nd rounder from 09) was born in Scottsdale, AZ. Both played their youth hockey in North America.

Alex Galchenyuk is North American by birth, having been born in Milwaukee while his dad Alexandr was playing for the Admirals, then of the IHL. Alex Sr. still played in North America when Alex jr. was 4, then in Russia, Italy, Switzerland, and finally his homeland Belarus, though I don't know if his family followed him in all his travels. Alex jr. played midget in Chicago.

So don't go jumping to conclusions simply based on a person's name, especially in immigration-heavy countries like the US and especially Canada :) - fzusher

Look for D-man Matt Dumba (Red Deer Rebels)to be a top 5 pick in the 2012 Draft. After selecting Dumba 3rd overall, after 2 other defencemen were selected in the WHL Bantam Draft Head of Hockey opperations Jesse Wallin said "If there are 2 defensemen better then Matt Dumba the 2012 entry draft will be the best draft class ever...". - Kevin

North Americans

There are several North Americans capable of making a push into the top picks. Ryan Murray is one to watch for, Griffin Reinhart is another and if Alex Galchenyuk (dual-citizenship) should also be included there ;)

Just to clarify, the forwards highlighted above are some of the better offensive forwards of the draft but there are several other forwards who are impact forwards. I will touch on them in a later article as I expand on other prospects that will be available in the 2012 draft. While Grigorenko, Yakupov and Galchenyuk currently sit among the favourites for the 2012 draft I didn't intend on making this a "strict ranking". Too much can happen over the course of the season.

I look forward to highlighting the defensemen available next as it's where the real depth is for the '12 draft. - Dean Youngblood

It looks like next year's draft will feature no North Americans in the top picks.... interesting.

Great read! - Greg
