Bryzgalov

Didn't trading Carter and Richards allow for the signing of Bryzgalov. The Flyers have been close with average to mediocre to rookie goaltending. With their D and now a top flight goalie, they can afford to take a bit of a hit initially by trading Carter and Richards. - Woodrow

Flyers 2 steps forward, 2.5 steps back?

I looked at the trades as:Richards,Carter,3rd = Voracek,Simmmonds,Schenn,Bryzgalov,8th pick. Thats what the salary cap has done. (Look at the Rangers: Gomez,Pyatt,Busto= Mcdonaugh,Higgins,Valentenko, Gaborik. Now that was a steal!)
But the step back has to be from the Flyers trading 2 top players in their prime for Schenn and Voracek who arent there yet, the quicker they get there- the more this turns to the Flyers favour- because a good part of their remaining stars- Briere,Timonen and especially Pronger and Bryzgalov are past 30. Who knows in 3 years they maybe moving Giroux to the wing to make room for Schenn and Couturier at center!

Philly has no cap room to sign Richards- not even close! they still have to resign:Voracek,Simmonds,Nodl- and bringing back Leino wont be cheap- and theyre still 2 or 3 spots to fill- that will take up almost every $ they have.

As for why they traded Richards- there was some kind of riff with Pronger, and as much as teams deny that dressing room issues/personality clashes affect their decisions- it happens and players get moved because of it. (Jeff Brown anyone?) :P - Larry

Entertaining moves

I don't know how the Philly moves will shake out. And I'm not a Flyer fan. But I'd love it if my team made moves as bold as Philly does. For better or worse, they always swing for the fences. Lindros, Pronger, all those deals to pick up player rights before July 1,... And this latest bunch of moves is just mind blowing - it's exactly what a really good fantasy hockey GM would do. Don't think your team has what it takes? Don't hesitate to trade your best guys for a whole lot of top tier young talent. JVR, Giroux, Schenn, Voracek, Couturier - that's a fantasy league dream team. And they also have former fantasy darlings Carle, Coburn & Meszaros on D. I'll bet anything Holmgren is in a fantasy league. - Jerry

Philly eats its own

The problem in Philly has never been the quality of the players and despite having gone through some avarage goalies they have destroyed the careers of some pretty good tenders, Esche, Cechmanek (spelling) Biron, Leighton was never more than a good AHL guy.

Anyone who thinks Toronto or Montreal are tough places to play, try Philly. One bad season and they start looking for scapegoats, remember Briere two years ago they couldn't wait to get rid of him and his salary, now he's ok again.

These trades by the Flyers are brutal especially the Richards trade. L-A made off like bandits because the Flyers lose their composure when they lose to good teams. This is a team that easily could have made the finals again this year and now they'll be lucky to make the playoffs next year.

Sugar-coated crap is still crap... - Mike Brown

I agree with your write up I just wonder why they didn't move Briere instead of Richards. - Jim Baskerville

Nice write up, Dobber. I don't think the Flyer's could have done a better job in the salary cap era. Giroux and JVR's improvements over the season will lessen the hurt next year. - Rad64

signing Brad Richards is ridiculously stupid and not their game plan at all. It would undo everything I write about in this article. They will keep the Leino line together by re-signing Ville, and keep a bit of breathing room. Nothing up their sleeve - and that's my whole point. The pieces fall into place much better now, if you look carefully and assign everyone a role - Dobber

I get the Carter trade. But I don't see how trading Mike Richards gets the Flyers anywhere closer to a cup. By the time they are ready to win with Voracek, Schenn and Couturier, Chris Pronger will be 40 yrs old. Brad Richards has played well for about 1 and half seasons since the lockout and is coming off a concussion. If overpaying Brad Richards is the card the Flyers have up their sleeves, I'd say it's about a Jack of Clubs. - Isle B.

Thanks guys

Team Canada is exactly what I had in mind when I wrote this - they didn't add Jeff Carter not because he wasn't the 12th best Canadian forward (he was that, and then some), but because he couldn't play a role. You want the best player for each role. - Dobber

And why does Team Canada place centres on the wings? Overall, Team Canada has an enviable record.

Should the Flyers manage to sign Brad Richards, this becomes a masterful re-design. Much quality youth infusion, many new faces to ensure hunger and high enthusiasm. One thing about the Flyers, they're never boring. - Jocular Hockey Manager

Too many Cs?

"With ____, ____, ____ and ____, they had four centermen who would be No.1 on most teams. So all of them suffered. _____ was forced out of his position and often _____ was as well. All four took hits in ice time and power-play time. The team lacked role players."

So... let's say Team ______ puts together a team with... let's say... Sidney Crosby, Joe Thornton, Ryan Getzlaf, Eric Staal, Patrice Bergeron, Mike Richards, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Marleau.

You are saying that this team can't win a championship because there are just too many centers, players not getting enough ice time, and players playing out of position.

Point. Noted. - Doubting Thomas

I tend to agree with your take, Dobber. With Carter/Richards and Bob/Bouch in net I saw this team finishing 2011-12 as 3rd in their division. Move out Carter/Richards, and I still see them behind Pitt/NJ, just with star players all playing in the right slots and young stars developing where they should. - ItsAlwaysSunnyInDetroit
