Good List

Pretty good list.

1-2 is certainly solid.
3 as Giroux is fine & good advice to your readers about possible C.
4 as MSL is fine, his stats are still there.
... (after that... a gap)

5. This is Semin for me. I can't stand the guy, he's a cherry picker, but his skill set is too high to ignore the potential. Most multi-cat leagues are also H2H. Band-aid boys aren't so devalued in H2H because when they play, they are gold (Gaborik sim.) and when they are injured, you can IR them, replace them and recoup some value.

The list strays a bit here for me. It is tight, but I'd go:
6. Iginla (still awesome)
7. Heatley (we all viewed him as a slacker this year, but his SH% was only 12% and he's historically a 15% shooter. That is just an off year. 3% more pucks in the net would have been 6-7 more goals. *I always track SH% for players in off years*)
8. Nash
9. Stewart
10. Skinner (not sold on his multi-cat value)

Sort of interesting that Giroux (C/RW) took over 200 more faceoffs than Briere (C/RW) and yet it is Giroux that everybody think might stay RW without mention of Briere. If PHI actually went to a stacked two-line forward line-up, I think Briere would play a RW... and not Giroux. - Pengwin7

Great article Jeff, and one I always enjoy reading and hearing your thoughts on. This top 10 is probably one that I am most in agreement with you on though.

However, personally, considering a 3 year window, I definitely think that Iginla deserves to be in the top 10. Probably over Skinner or Semin for me. Its probably an oversight on your part, but I would say that Hemsky is deserving of an HM listing. - Ryan

Hemmer

I believe he cracked your top 10 last year. Helluva fall since then.
I'd still take him over a handful of the HM's you had tho. 65pts in his last 70 NHL games. Tough to make a case for such a band-aid tho.

Another good list Angus. This list will be a lot tougher to compile next year tho when Carter and Giroux are full-time C's, Heatley continues his downward spiral into awfulness, and Semin is in Moscow. - donions

iginla

I think that keeping in mind that you are looking at a 3 year window max - you still need to put Iginla before skinner and stewart. .iggy is steady eddy and both stewart and Skinner are nowhere near as certain to put up big numbers. That's a big omission in my unbiased opinion.

Heatley

I agree with 95% of your list Angus. I do think Heatley is overrated here though.

"He is only four years removed from consecutive 50+ goal, 100+ point seasons with the Senators. "

4 years is a long time for a pure goal scorer. Setup man getting 100pts no..but goal scorer getting back to 50 yes. When a player scores 50 and are 4 years removed from that season..how many actually get back to that elite level? I wondered this myself and looked at all of the great scorers stats. Gretzky, Dionne, Richard, Lafleur, Esposito, Robitaille, Yzerman, Hull and many many others. Out of all of these players, none of them regained their 50 goal form after being four years removed. And only the special players continue with 100pt seasons like Lemieux, Gretzky. Heatley I would not consider a special player. And I can't see Heatley being the first out of all of these players to get back to 50 after being four years removed. Your one year upside seems reasonable but 3 year upside I think needs a bit of a downturn. I think 40g/85pts is probably more in line.

In fact I think poolies should be trying to sell him in keepers now while his value is still relatively high and I think it will only get lower. - Mr Sausage

I like the list, and the thought put into producing it. Although he doesn't fit in the top group based on points only, Dustin Brown sure fits when you add hits, PM, etc

No complaints with the list though - Mike

Heart would be a sweet stat. How would it be calculated though? ;)

Truculence would also be a good stat. - Big Ev

Heart isn't a pool statistic. Exactly my point with Semin. Don't underrate him because he is a floater. He produces. In 08-09 and 09-10, he was in the top three among all RW in standard roto leagues.

I love the feedback, of course we have differing opinions. - Jeff Angus

potential

Jeff...think you may have overplayed potential on a few in the list...Heatley is on the way down Honorable Mention at best. Nash/Semin sorry the potential is there just no heart and that means a much higher risk in a pool.
Any of the HM are worth a pick in a pool nice list. Maybe A better way to look at the list is at total fantasy points moves a few of the HM in to the top 10 especially with SOG and Hits. - mike hess

What's with the complaining..lol.
Too many honorable mentions listed?? Really?
Havlat (has to be a relative) and Hemsky for keepers?? That would be called the "wishful thinking keepers league".

One thing I look for are the all around fantasy players. I would take a Backes over so many of the ppg players who's other stats are sub par. Like Kane, so elite and awesome but he never hits, doesn't take penalties, didn't take a whole lot of shots, average ppp's (lots of pp time to spread around in Chicago), +7 is good but not a deal maker. - shaun b

No HM for Havlat? 6 pts in 6 world champ games. 2 seasons of at least a point/game. No longer a bandaid boy (knock on wood). - Ian

Good list, but... 13 honorable mentions? Really? That's more than the list itself! Kinda takes away from the meaning of the list as the "top 10 keepers" if you actually list 23. - Jamie Nay

Not sure Giroux has 100 point upside or if Skinner has 95 point upside, but as you say that would be perfect seasons. Solid list.

Also, Heatley is done as a truly elite forward. I'd place him outside the list but still close to #10. He just can't shoot enough anymore due to his bum shoulder, and others on the team have surpassed him. I would take Iggy and Loui over him for sure. - Big Ev

How does Iginla not make the top 10?? I don't normally argue with your rankings Jeff, but Iginla has outscored Nash every year Nash has been in the league. In no way shape or form would I trade my Iginla straight up at this point for any of the players except for the top 5. - sheldon

Personally I love having Alas Hemsky in Yahoo Lgs or leagues with an IR...

Hes only good for like 40-60 games a year average... but in those games he is almost Point per game on a bad team, and as Edmonton gets better he should be over PPG... not to mention almost 3 shots per game and is a + player...

That puts him up there with your top 10 on a game to game basis... - Jason Banks
