Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't David Savard, who is less than one month older than Moore, have more goals, more point, and a waaaaay better plus/minus (-7 to -29) in one less game played. In fact Savard is the second leading rookie defensive scorer in the AHL. All this after coming off a 77 point season in the QMJHL, while winning the best defenseman and best defensive defenseman awards for that league. Don't you think David Savard might be the one walking into the perfect situation at training camp this fall. - Karbinkopy

1. SO. Yes, overrated... but, I don't trust goalies that can't get shutouts. Jimmy Howard had few SO and several 1-goal games last year when he "appeared" to be an excellent goalie.

8. "Corner the market" on 2-3 teams. Hedge funds are for old people. Consistently finishing between 3rd & 5th is just boring.

shutouts are more of a team stat, but wins is compleatly a team stat and goalies get credit for them too.
broduer has a 12 save shutout and a 13 save shutout. now if thats not a team shutout then they should both only add up to one shutout. lol. - kevinsrangers

Shutouts/Playoff Strategies

Angus,

i couldn't agree/disagree with you more about shutouts. From a fantasy perspective I would much rather have a goalie with a high shutout total and similar stats. As a coach or in real life I would rather have the more consistent goalie shutout total be damned as it gives the team in front of them confidence. As a coach, I'd much rather know that if the team scorse 3 goals we win 3-2 90% of the time than if we score 3 goals we win 50% of the time (mostly be shutout) and lose the rest b/c Luongo (errrr.... I mean our team goalie) is having an off night.

As for playoff pool strategies I am a proponent of picking 2 teams and snapping up all their best players. Any other strategy seems to only be a strategy to compete, not win the pool. Late rounds I will take the best players on an underdog(1st round exit) team rather than a scrub 3rd or 4th liner on a contender. - David Goodburn

Rick Nash

Without the lockout, Nash may not have become a 'franchise player'. Playing in Europe that year aided him greatly, while players like Iginla took the year off and his scoring and fitness were not where they should have been had there not been a lockout. Nash was rather beastly the year after the lockout, fine tuning his skill and confidence during the lockout. Similar effect to Giroux scoring the penalty shot at the end of last season. It gave him the confidence required to step his game to the next level. Something that many skilled players miss out on unfortunately; the obscure event that causes the 'Confidence Bump'. - Ross The Boss Palmer

@Austin/Angus... re: Shutouts

AHA! Now I know why neither of you likes shutouts as a goaltending statistic. Ya darn Vancouver fans... :P

I agree with Todd Whittington at the bottom. Shutouts are important because it shows perfection on the part of the team and the goaltender.

I understand fantasy sports not using plus/minus... or pims... but I hope SO never disappear from the typical fantasy hockey setup. Just because they are just as much team dependent as they are player dependent, doesn't mean they're not worth accounting for. - lanky522

Sorry in advance I do not know the exact numbers but...
I think Luongo has 4 shutouts or something but leads the league in one goal games with like 25 or something crazy like that. Also I would say he has had about 6 shutouts stolen from him in the last two minutes. So I think they are definitely overrated! - Austin

Shutouts..if you're looking for consistency in goalie stats, saves and save percentage are the way to go. Shutouts are sweet, but they do tend to be more of a team stat along with GAA. - Rad64

Great Work + TJ Brodie

Great job Angus! This is the style of writing I love to read and write myself. It is an easy way to get ones' true thoughts in an easy-to-read format

I love that you mentioned TJ Brodie (from my hometown of 2700 people). Brodie's stat line is impressive considering that Abbortsford really lacks a true offensive forward weapon. - Dean Youngblood

Angus...good job, again...and yes while you owe a debt to Friedman's weekly 30 thoughts; your approach is much more helpful/meaningful for my fantasy hockey team. Keep up the good work the nuggets you had out will pay big time next year...

I also think shutouts are a team win, few are done without good defense... - mike hess

interesting note on strategies, i don't have a lot of experience in keepers but some notes i have made include
depth - I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket for example i would rather have both sedins than crosby or Getzlaf and Perry rather than ovechkin.
i think this comes very apparent in H2H playoffs - a few stars tend to get rested before the playoffs - so you trade the farm for ovechkin before the playoffs and then when the caps sit him for a week you could be screwed.

My point being i strive to have a well rounded team versus a top heavy one.

Yes, but my argument relates to two goalies with similar stats. A goalie who always lets in 3 goals won't have good stats. - Jeff Angus

The shut out is hockey's answer to perfection. Is it a team influenced result? Sure. But at the end of the day a shutout is simply stating that a goalie played a flawless game that night. That in my mind is something special. It may not be as rare as a shut out in baseball but it still means the same thing. That goalie/pitcher didn't allow a goal/run. It means something.

I mean your argument on consistency also applies to a goalie who lets in 3 goals or more every single game he plays. He's quite consistent. But never perfect.

My 2c. - Todd Whittington
