Chad - I only mentioned Marchand for 60 pt potential for NEXT year only. I'm not sure what a guy like Dobber would say his upside is. I did think he was only "talented" enough to play third line and the occasional sub for 2nd line duties, but watching him play this year has changed my mind. He could pull a Burrows and challenge 70 points as early as next year. I would still be tempted to keep a legit 60 pt player (depending on who it was of course) over the potential of Marchand ever hitting 70 pts. Very tough call, but I wouldn't call anyone dumb if they went the other way because I could easily be wrong on this one!

Larry - You are right, both Ryder and Recchi are UFA, but interestingly enough, Marchand is RFA. Forwards under contract for next season: Bergeron, Lucic, Horton, Krejci, Peverley, Kelly and Seguin. It doesn't include Savard because I think he'll be on LTIR for the Bruins. Marchand could definitely fit into the top six, but there will be competition and he doesn't get much PP TOI. Yes that could change next season for sure. It's just not a slam dunk, hence why in a limited keeper, I take veteran's who have been there, done that over the sexy potential players. BTW, I like Marchand and just noticed (should have noticed two days ago...) that his TOI has been over 16 minutes in each of the last 6 games except for one game (14:27).

Thanks for your comments. - Russ Miller

great article- although I wouldnt hesitate to keep Grabner, he has yet to come close to maxing out his icetime, granted I would feel more comfortable if he played with Tavares. Marchand is a tuff one, Recchi is a fossil and Ryder i believe is a UFA so there may be a good opportunity for Marchand to move up the depth charts. - Larry

dropping Marchand is a bold move! I think he's going to surprise and his 60 point upside is going to be amended higher, much higher. - Chad Burly

shortcut - Jesse covered the reasons why Leopold's injury didn't factor into this article. No worries!

Ronny - Gagne will be one of the players covered in tomorrow's part 2 of the article

Katharsis - I have experience with 12 team, 10 protections in a standard (whatever that means) roto league, so I used that as sort of a very rough guide

Johnbuoy - Wow, what a difficult decision. I would lean towards Benn. I get the Neal/Crosby potential, but Benn just stands out more for me. What if Neal and Crosby can't create magic together and he turns into Kunitz v2.0? Nah, I think Benn is on his way to becoming a special player - 50 points in 62 games? Awesome. Tough call either way and really, you won't know if you were right until it's too late!!

Pengwin7 - Thanks and I can't argue too hard with your arguments as presented. Grabner and Wheeler were two of the toughest for me to decide on. I like Grabner, but he's really only had one good half and those damn sophomore slumps scare me. Like I said, if you've got options, I might be tempted to keep him. As for Wheeler, I tend to give big offensive-minded forwards that are drafted 5th overall a little bit of slack. I'm not totally sold on him, but my gut feel is that he can be a player next year, but I wouldn't bet the house on that!! - Russ Miller

Another 5-Star piece, Russ!
Awesome. I've gotten tired off agreeing with your stuff so I'll stir the pot and try to disagree with a few.

Wheeler is a cut bait for me. He has been paired with Little & Ladd of late, and my eyes see him as the 3rd most talented forward on that line... which means that unless that line is together all year, his stats will be the ones that dip if the lines are shuffled.

Grabner, oh mercy - I'm going to draft him next year. He & Nielsen are a perfect pair. Nielsen watches out for his line's +/- and tells Grabner to go yonder and cherry-pick some goals. Fishy, fishy, IMO.

And that's it. I give you props for going "Cut Bait" on Seguin. Hard to do because he has so much promise, but I agree that BOS is likely to bring him along slowly. I dropped him off from a 13-team, 8-player keeper this year. (in favor of Karlsson & Crawford) - Pengwin7

I know you've already stated the obvious in that it all depends on league make up, number of keepers, etc., but are you writing these articles based on certain setup at all? I'm curious to see the frame of reference for your picks here. - Katharsis

I can only choose one of James Neal or Jamie Benn... who would you pick? I have Sidney Crosby as well so I'm leaning towards Neal, even though Benn is having a slightly better season. - Johnbuoy

@shortcuttomoncton Really? Did you really not understand the purpose of this article. It's not about the rest of this season. If you bothered to read the first paragraph you would have noticed that Russ "compiled a list of players that may have some question marks as protectable players in limited keeper leagues heading into next season." Really. - Jesse
