I, too, was really surprised to see Edler ahead of Enstrom, and Enstrom not on that list at all. He posts surprisingly good PIM, but his SOG totals are definitely low. Two 50 + point seasons are more than Edler's 0, even if he was on pace. What exactly is your reasoning behind having Edler ahead of him, just 'cus I don't think I'd find many people who would be willing to trade me Enstrom straight up for Edler... - ryan

The reason watching games is telling you JJ is no longer a defensive liability is because he has always been good defensively at times. But over a larger sample size he is still prone to bad plays and it seems more like lack of concentration or hockey smarts vs. skill. I thought he turned the corner defensively last year (from watching games) and was going to benefit the most from Willie Mitchell's presence. But while +/- can be a bs stat, a huge # like -17 does not lie, especially when the rest of their top-6 D are all +. He's the only guy capable of getting 2 points in a 5-3 victory and still ending up -3. - jacques oeuf

Jeff,
What would a points only version of this list look like? That would be interesting to compare . . . - Jack Scholl

Erik Johnson

Erik Johnson has turned his game around since the trade, 3 goals and 7 assists in 15 games. Over a full season that translates into a 54 point season. He is clearly Colorado's best player by a long shot. This guy will show why he was a number 1 over all next year. I have watched a few Colorado games lately and while Colorado as a whole stinks Johnson has been outstanding. I see Johnson at 50+ next year. Watch for a big breakout next year. - Brian Harling

Green is too high/ Where is Campbell?

Not to take anything away from Mike Green, who is a great skater, passer and has a very good shot, but his gaudy numbers were mainly a function of the Capitals' free-wheeling style. I think many d-men on this list could have put up similar numbers if given free reign on a team with Ovechkin, Backstrom and Semin. Now that the Caps are no longer playing that way, I don't think Green should be #1. I would put Yandle, Doughty, Keith and maybe even Dan Boyle (who ought to be top 10) ahead of him now.

Where is Brian Campbell? He is the best skater and best outlet passer in the league and had a 60+ point season not too long ago. If McBain and OEL make this list almost entirely on potential how can a player in his prime who has actually put up the big numbers not make it? - Isle B.

This is a great list Angus, you're the reason why I picked up Yandle in my in augural keeper (8th round - 16 Teams..12 F 6 D 2 G 5 BN) this season putting me in 1st so far in a tight race for top 3 money. Keep up the great work! - Mr JC

Tyler Myers?

I've just read the HM list twice because thought I must have missed Myers the first time. He's not as all-world as last year, but as everyone said before the season began - Buffalo's offseason moves (or lack thereof) were almost bound to hurt his production. He turned 21 last month and should hit 12G, 40P and around -5, after an absolutely brutal start to this season.

This is the defenceman who won the Calder last year with almost 50 points, +13, 140 blocks, etc. etc.... He doesn't warrant honourable mention over guys like E Johnson? How is he not a 45-50pt semi-lock for next year and beyond? - shortcuttomoncton

Karlsson?

Concerned about Karlsson (44points). Lots off offensive potential but he is a disaster defensively with a -29 currently. He is promising but I don't think he is ready for the top 10. I would have gone with John Carlson (32 points +17)or Pietrangelo (39 points +15) instead.

Also you didn't even list Tyler Myers (35 points -5) who is having an off year but still has as many points and +- as Subban. - Brian Harling

Byfuglien vs Weber

I had Byfuglien, Weber and Edler in my keeper league earlier in the season. I traded Edler for Selanne just before Edler went down and right now Selanne-Getzlaf combo on my team is deadly in the play-offs. But after the season I will have to trade one more D-man because of the keeper format in the league. Do you really think Byfuglien will be better than Weber? So far I have been leaning towards Weber as Byfuglien slowed down considerably in the middle of the season.

Byfuglien points this season:

41 pts in 42 games
0 pts in 13 games
10 pts in 18 games

The pace from the last 18 games is about 45 points, so based on that I'd expect 45-55 next season. He definitely showed he has a huge upside during the first part of the season, but I think he has been kind of figured out by other teams.

On the other hand, Weber probably falls in the same category, but I always expected him to produce more than that (55-60 points), since he's one of my favourite defenseman.

So, is Buff really better to own than Weber? - Lukasz

I agree with your other points, but it can go both ways. Green may lose EV time but he is fresher for PP time. Same goes for Karlsson. Maximizes their offensive abilities because better defensive defensemen fill in the other minutes. - Jeff Angus

Wasn't John Carlson number one on last year's list? I think you based this one on near-term play more than future play but if Carlson continues to be more responsible than Green then I think him and Alzner will cut into Green's 5 v 5 time a bit. And I would say the same about Cowen/Runblad on Ottawa but I think Karlsson will improve defensively, he's shown he can play against the other team's best line.

Enstrom though...maybe he has more value in a video game or something than a points based keeper league but I prefer him to Byfuglien as a dman, he just won't be as good with the fantasy stats. - Uzair

It's a solid list, Jeff.

Everyone will have guys they think should be higher/lower, but that's the whole point of these exercises sometimes.

I was hoping your HM's were in a bit of a next-in-line list...but then realized it was alphabetical by team...either way, it was very heartening to see Fowler up that high. - Ian

JW - Watching games.

Molson - solid list.

Even as a 40 point d-man, Buff will get SOG, PIM, plus-minus, etc. Category filler. I'll disagree but it is definitely a realistic outcome.

Gareth - because I like Edler better? :)

Randall - fair point. HM's are meant to highlight the contenders. Each player could conceivably be in the list with a strong season or two.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I spent a lot of time compiling this list so I enjoy discussing and debating it. - Jeff Angus

Agree with this list for the most part, but Byfuglien is way too high. Weber should be an HM, not part of the top 10.

1)Green
2)Yandle
3)Doughty
4)Keith
5)Karlsson
6)Enstrom
7)Letang
8)Byfuglien
9)Visnovsky
10)Edler

Next best HM: Subban, Boyle, Weber

I also think Kaberle jumps into this top 10 easily depending on where he goes this off season.

Cheers. - Molson

Only 7 defensemen in the league currently sport a worse +/- than JJ's -17. Looking at Los Angeles's defensemen, Jake Muzzin is the next worse with a -2; Drew Doughty is +14. JJ has been following an obvious trend over the past 4 seasons... -19, -18, -15, -17. Where is the evidence for his improved defensive play? - JW
