As much as I'd like to call him a fantasy stud, I'd almost say that Grabo could just as easily join MacArthur in the boom/bust category. Who realistically thought he would get 30-35 goals this year? If expectations aren't reigned in on him, there could be a lot of people disappointed in Grabo next year if (when) he doesn't repeat....and believe me, if (big if) the Leafs find a legitimate centre for Kessel, that will eat into the ice time / power play time of this year's "big line".

On the goalie side, let's just cross our fingers that Reimer keeps up the top drawer play. One great year (or half year) might give you opportunities, but how many people out there still think that Steve Mason is an elite fantasy option??!!

Grabo

Yeah I can see how the debate was close.
I have more goals for Grabo tho, both in his career thus far and this season. 28-26 (2010-11), 20-15 (2008-09) 2009-10 was an injury year for Grabo.

Grabo may get less PIMs, but his SOG and +/- are better. I can appreciate the debate tho. So close. The deciding factor to me would be position, as I mentioned. I'd have gone with Grabo, but that's almost flipping a coin I guess.

Enjoyed your article anyway, and I liked your props to Phaneuf. He was in a bad spell, but has too much talent to suck for too long. - agentzero

@agentzero: I had a large debate of whether to choose kulemin over grabovski, but this is what I realized:

Goals: Kulemin>Grabo
Assists: Grabo>Kulemin
Powerplay Points: Kulemin=Grabo
Hits/Blocks: Kulemin>Grabo
PIMS: Kulemin>Grabo

So besides assists, Grabo and Kulemin are very similar players, but Kulemin is a grittier, bigger player that gets more penalties and more hits. Also, like you mentioned centres are easier to come by in fantasy hockey. - Tyler K

Grabovski?

Grabovski is far and away the best Leafs forward this season, at 28G (like Kessel) and is a plus12. He has around 80 less SOG but give me the better +/- over SOG. I think he deserved to make the list, given that while he hasn't put up the 2 30G season like Kessel, he's done fairly well on a horrible Leafs team with little help, since his arrival. The fact that he's a plus player on such a crummy team where others like Kessel are near the bottom in that stat to me is pretty significant.

Is it because he's a C and they are somewhat available when it comes to fantasy hockey? - agentzero

@Tim, thanks for the support!

@Kris, this was for prospects that have a shot in 2011/12. While I think Blacker and D'amigo are amazing prospects, I don't expect them in the NHL until 2012/13. But definitely keep an eye on him.

@ frozenpools, Bozak will be a great asset in a blocked shots/hits/faceoff league, but nothing special in points only or Powerplay points. - Tyler K

Solid article!

Jessee Blacker is a name people shouldn't forget when talking about useful Leafs prospects. He was a 2nd rounder (58th overall) and has really kicked his game up to a whole new level this year with the Owen Sound Attack scoring 10 goals and adding 44 assists in 62 games. He's probably still a few years away but he projects as a top 4 d-man when his time comes.

D'Amigo is another kid who has the potential to become fantasy relevant in a few years. He clearly wasn't ready to compete against men in the AHL but after being sent to junior to join the Kitchener Rangers he's been a force posting 28 points through 21 games. He's one of those players who probably doesn't land a permanent job outside of the top six and he's a long way from that but the potential is there. I'll be watching his performance with the Marlies very closely next year. - Kris

Very well written article. I enjoyed the read very much!

In goal, I see a 4th possible scenario and that would be Gustavsson either taking the reigns full time or splitting time with Reimer (Giguere jettisoned). Keep in mind that nowadays many goalies hit a sophomore slump, no matter how well they played the previous season. That slump can be temporary (Rask), but just long enough for someone else (Thomas) to sneak back in and steal starts. It honestly does not take very long to lose the job when you only have one season of performance to show. Just look at Michael Leighton. - Tim Lucarelli

@Larry: If you are in a 10 man league, in no way should Reimer be your stud goalie next year. However, he has tons of potential, and is slightly younger than Raycroft when he played for the Leafs. Also with Giggy, the only way i see him playing next year as a leaf is being a mentor for Reimer (a young, unproven goalie) for a salary of 1 million or less. - Tyler K

I like your analysis, really good article ;)
Phaneuff - I agree he performed well in last 6 weeks, but considering the fact that he was drafted in the second round in the league i am in, makes him "fantasy stud" only if he was bought low back at the end of January. - Michal Sk

Reimer...

When thinking of his 'potential' think of this: Andrew Raycroft. He was the 'answer' at one point, with a far bigger product sample, and much higher pedigree.Reimer has the markings of a 'flash in the pan',playing on a team that will struggle to make the playoffs- means hands off for me. With the crashing market for goalies not changing any time soon- and Giguere's injury problems (and age) he would be lucky to get a contract offer for anything over minimum wage. Being a mentor to a team with a young unproven goalie might be his only chance at extending his career.(ala Osgood, Conklin, Hedberg).

Colborne sounds like an intriguing prospect, but I have yet to see him play-hopefully he is a top 6 forward for the Leafs soon. - Larry
