Washington - Andrew Gordon is again dominating the A, posting over a point per game with an even goal-assist split; still only 25 and given little NHL opportunity in Washington, he may pull a Moulson/Parenteau on another team if used as a trade chip. Carolina - Have a mandate to spend to ensure a playoff berth but not much more - I think their owner knows enough about hockey and trusts Rutherford enough to not risk a bright future for short term gain (in other words, would realize that it makes more financial sense not to give up on system depth that should make them a constant playoff fixture for several years in the near future for an attempt to make the second round this year). Plus, I don't see their forward UFAs as such that can fetch them a true second liner. However, with an AHL team brimming with intriguing players (Terry, Boychuk, Dalpe, Matsumoto, Riley Nash, Bowman, Jared Staal, Jordan, Sanguinetti) they don't really need more NHL-ready prospect depth. However, with only 2 forwards in the system outside minor-pro (one of whom is just breaking out of Swedish u-20 league), I can see them converting some UFAs into picks or recent draftees to restock the next wave of talent - and focusing on forwards in the draft (they have 8 Ds in college, junior, and Europe). I would keep an eye on Edmonton as a dance partner with Carolina - they have made numerous trades in recent seasons, and have players that answer Canes needs: a back up goalie in Gerber (who is course well familiar to the Canes from their cup run), Vandermeer as a veteran D, and Hemsky or Penner as a second line W (though the asking price for him is high right now, and while the list above suggests they have assets to move, none of them other than Boychuk and Sanguinetti have the luster needed in a deal for Hemsky, and I'd be surprised if they are willing to move Boychuk, plus he'd be another smallish forward on a team that has too many of them as such; personally i'd love to see Brandon Sutter moved to Edmonton and square off against his clansmen in the battles of Alberta, but that ain't gonna happen). Of these options, somehow Gerber for one of the Carolina prospects makes sense the most to me. Atlanta - Would trading Eric Boulton now that he's a hattrick hero be considered sell high? [agree with Dobber on everything here, btw] Florida - The problem with trading Vokoun is that the market is still limited - his cap hit or salary restricts the few playoff or bubble teams that might use a short-term boost in goal (cap hit in the case of DET, SJS, CHI, WSH, salary in the case of DAL and ANA) but these teams don't really have spare salary to give back. Like Dobber, I have a feeling someone will move for him, but reason says otherwise.
