RE: CY Young

Is a baseball term and its the award that goes to the best pitcher, generally one that has the best winning record and ERA.

It's just a bit of a joke in the hockey context for players who have a great goals to assists ratio.

So Couture has great Cy Young numbers, meaning he has 18G to 7A, if a pitcher put up those numbers, he'd be a strong Cy Young candidate. - Ryan Ma

it refers to a player mimicing a 'cy young' worthy win-loss record, in this case with goals/assists- ie alot of goals, not many helpers. - Larry

RE: Chi SOG

Hossa has a career 3.37 SOG/game average. This season he's at 2.87...
Kane has a career 2.91 SOG/game average. This season he's at 3.03...

That's pretty close to around 6 per game between the two... and at 18.75 percent of their team 32 SOG/game average.

It's kinda been artificially inflated because both of them have been out of the lineup so someone had to take the shots. Don't get me wrong I still think that Sharpie will get his SOG, just not at the current pace. I suggested he slows down a bit but 300 seems more reasonable than 350... - Ryan Ma

RE: Rangers

I don't follow them all that much, but to me their success has been without Drury in the lineup. They're 500 with him (3-3) and 18-11-2 without him. Just looking at plain old numbers, they seem to be better with out him... - Ryan Ma

What does the phrase "Cy Young number" mean in the context of hockey? I don't even know what that phrase would mean in the context of baseball :) - jason

Disagree that Sharp's SOG will dry up that much. Kane and Hossa both think pass first. Sharpie has been locked and loaded all season, with or without Kane and Hossa in the lineup. Not saying he'll stay on pace for 350, but 300 is likely.

Good article nonetheless. Especially interesting that Minny can be so successful on the power play yet so poor in SOG overall. - Committed to the Indian
