Elias: all of the tools - draft advisor, trade analyzer, player equivalency, league breakdown (and more to come) - are used within the context of your specific league. Whichever set of statistics you choose when generating your league's rankings (including custom projections) will be used with all of the tools.

Like HPG said, let us know if you have any questions.

Last year I only used Draft Advisor before the draft to rehearse the strategy, and during the offline draft(without telling to my friends of course ;D). During the season I did not use HPG that much... BUT now after checking the new HPG site I may have the eat my words about pricing!

Added goalie information and especially the trade analyzer makes the subscription attractive. BTW, can you use your own custom projections in the trade analyzer?

I will really have to think about subscribing. Keep up the good work HPG! - Elias Hanson

Thanks for the feedback, Elias. It's appreciated.

Goalie are already in there...

To your comment on pricing, we actually thought about it really hard. Comparing an ongoing suite of tools to a "moment-in-time" document like Dobber's guide isn't quite fair. The subscription lasts a year, and all the tools are the the type of thing that you'd use on an ongoing basis to manage your team and get real insight on the moves you need to make... it's not just prep for your draft.

A subscription to HPG works out to less than $2 a month for the duration of a fantasy hockey season, and we think that's a tiny price to pay for the tools to make the right decisions about your leagues.

Hope this makes sense. If you want to talk more about it, I'm happy to. Fire me a line at geek@hockeypoolgeek.com

All the best,

Very good article!

I used HPG Draft analyzer last year and it was very useful. Also the viewpoint about weighting values of pöayers vs league breakdown was eye-opening.

Having said that, IMO $19.99 is too much for the service when compared to eg to Dobber's fantasy quide. Have you really thought about pricing? I am sure you would have more revenue with 10 bucks, really! Don't get greedy :).

By the way, last year there was no information about goalies - are you planning to add goalies this year?

Thanks HPG! - Elias Hanson

Nicely done, Angus. Glad it helped out, and good call waiting until the trades were consummated in before publishing! :D

Thanks for the kind words, all. - HPG

That was quite impressive. I think trading will be a tad more difficult now!

By the way we actually have one more goalie stat for a total of 8. Fantrax added SA for us after a request: GS, W, L, GAA, SA, SV, SV%, and SHO

I'd definately drop Carcillo. :)

WOW. Very nice analysis.
I actually like Angus' team quite a lot. Some of those guys are irreplaceable, which is always the way to go.

What gets me is that this setup is probably typical of a lot of "local" fantasy hockey leagues.
10 (!!!) categories for 15 skaters,
and 7 cats for 2 goalies... who the f^&@*# can keep track of something like that?
And who the hell wants to?
And how is it good in ANY way that 2 of 17 active players account for 41% of a team's scoring????

It's one thing to want more than just a "points" pool,
but at what point do we lose the forest for the trees?
When will it end?
Continual expansion into more and more statistics just renders them less meaningful.

Okay, enough soapbox.

6-category leagues forever!

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

The math here is pure gold. It makes you wonder if a passionate hockey fan with a lack of math skills stands any chance to win one of these pools!?! :o - Pengwin7

skaters vs. goalies

Thanks for tackling what I think is one of the most subtle and multifaceted topics in cat leagues - relative importance of skaters and goalies. In my entire 1 season of fantasy hockey experience, I had a dominant skater team most of the year, and kept getting trounced in H2H. Traded OV for Miller +, and got better, but still, with (I think) a top team, caught a bad break and was ousted 1st round of the playoffs.
In trying again next year, I'm really torn about my strategy, but most of the interesting arguments are at least touched on here. I'll be seeking advice once the cats and rosters are decided upon! - Hey_Robbie

As always HPG, great work on Angus's team! I noticed yesterday that you are now going to rake in some well deserved money for your website work.

Needless to say, it'll be 20 bucks well spent!

PS Jeff... good luck making trades after this analysis. - Renegade
