Malone/Whitney

Is there support for the idea that TB wants rid of Malone's contract? Or is it just speculation because its seemingly a pricey deal? I just can't imagine that TB can be all that disappointed in what Malone has done since he signed there. If they've gotten all you could reasonably expect, I'm not sure I get why they'd be looking to move him and his deal unless they think the deal itself was bad from the inception.

I'll tell you what, as a Pens fan, I wish the Pens had signed Malone at the $3.75-$4 it likely would have taken to keep him here.

As for Whitney, I don't see him willing to take all that much of a pay cut. I just don't think the Pens will have the cash to re-sign Whitney. This is especially true before free agency begins. The Pens have to step into the UFA market to bring in at least one dman, so, until that has been done, I don't see them allocating that kind of money (~$2.75) to an aged winger. - Kraftster

arron- that trade would help both teams except Montreal cant take on Malones contract and resign Plekanec and give Halak anything close to what he would command (i cant see him signing for less than 3mil per season). More salary would have to go Tampa's way and I cant see that happening especially when they would have to sign Price whom is unlikely to take a paycut from his 2.2mil deal. Gomez also has a limited no trade deal (as well as Gionta,Camm,Spacek,Hamrlik). As for the Olympics- any GM wouldve been questioned about adding Vinnie to the roster- he had a rough season, especially at the start.Stamkos shouldve gone before him.

Once its determinged where Turco,Nabby,Mason end up we should have a theory as to where Price ends up. If florida moves Vokoun-that could change everything. - Larry

T-Bay & Montreal

Tampa - Gomez, Price

Montreal - Vinny Lecavs & Malone

Reason: Montreal needs to get rid of one goalie and Gomez is overpaid. This transaction would be a salary switch between Gomez & Vinny's large contract while Montreal can feel it justified to trade Price away for a super stud from QC. Montreal would also get tougher with the likes of Malone and.....

TBay gets rid of a HUGE contract, finally gets a goalie and still maintains a second line center.

Note: #19 didn't pick Lecavs for the olympics which speaks volumes.

Thoughts??

I agree with your assessment with one problem, Philly doesn't really have a big salary cap problem this year. With the cap raising 2 million, we will have 10 million to resign players of need and a goalie.

Carter would fetch 5.5-6 in an offer sheet. CBA puts that around 2-4 1sts. I understand that's a lot for Carter but what's going to happen when Vokoun's contract is up next year? He'll walk and FLA gets nothing. That puts Philly back in the driver's seat. Agree to disagree? ;) - Renegade

It makes sense in a lot of ways, but TB doesn't have a 2nd round pick to give so you can kaibosh that potential deal. - studley49

Love these articles. I just have to say the Briere has always been dominant he just needed to play his natural position. I am confident he will post 80+ points if he gets to play center like he did in Buffalo. - RNS

Angus I have two problems with your Whitney write up.

Biggest problem is saying that Crosby has never played with a winger able to keep up with his skill. I think Marian Hossa would take great offense to that ;D

I also would be a bit disappointed if Shero decided to trade the 4th in 2010 for Whitney's rights, as if I recall correctly, Whitney made it pretty clear he would be happy to go to Pittsburgh during the stretch run this past season. If he was happy then, surely he'd be happy enough to sign with Pittsburgh as a UFA now, and not cost them the pick. - Daniel Bellan

Hey Jeff,

How about a spin surrounding a trade with Nashville? I'm sure they could move a d-man or two for some scoring. Hamhuis/Franson/Blum???

Thanks,

I would say the fans are out of touch with reality. No way is Carter going to fetch Vokoun, Repik and the 3rd overall pick.

If Carter signs an offer sheet a team would likely only have to cough up a 1st and a 3rd round pick.....without sending an elite tender.

Philly needs to dump salary...Florida does note. In the salary cap era that puts Florida in the driver seat, not Philly....

I've been talking heavy with FLA fans on HF and the Flyers fans concluded Carter is worth (Vokoun + RW like Repik + 3rd overall)

Reasoning: What if Vokoun decides not to resign? We lose a 40 goal scorer RFA for a 34 yr old UFA and only gain a RW prospect and a weak 2nd. With the 3rd, we can draft a dman to learn behind Pronger. Meanwhile, FLA gains a RFA that if he doesn't resign... can get a nice offer sheet (at least 2 firsts). I agree though FLA is the best team for a deal. - Renegade
