He would also give them a legit goal scorer to go with mostly all assists center S Gomez. They could then play a little hard ball with Plekanec and if he decides to walk via the UFA route they could resign D Moore as their 3rd line center and the use the extra money for help elsewhere. The salaries in this deal are basically a wash for 2010-11. The SJ/Mon trade idea makes zero sense of the Habs they don't even get a goaltender back in return, and thats not enough value for Price IMO. And I beg to differ w/ Sharks goalie situation because they have plenty of young goalies like Greiss and Stalock, not to mention Henrik Karlsson who the organization is pretty high on. FLA/MIN proposal makes no sense for Minnesota IMO. Team isn't deep enough on the backend to deal Burns without getting a d-man back. Why not send him to Columbus for Voracek and the 4th overall pick. If possible add a bit more and somehow get a 5th/6th d man added but no idea how to squeeze that in there. It would be much nicer to see us land Mason but that's not likely so why not get Voracek to play on the top line with Giroux and Gagne. Then make a HUGE splash at the podium and scoop us up Campbell. Sure it's a bit early but after Nashville screwed us for Pickard not to long ago it's better to grab him while he's there. Pull this off and things would look like Gagne-Giroux-Voracek Hartnell-Briere-Leino JVR-Richards-Carcillo Powe-Betts-Lappierre Finally we would have a tender in the system worth his weight in gold. That is of course if he is indeed as talented as believed. It is fair and realistic. As a neutral, non-Leaf hating Avs fan, I get annoyed seeing Leaf fans constantly overrate Kaberle's trade value. Take Rad64 below for example who somehow believes Kaberle has more trade value than Burns (there's a reason Burns got invited by Team Canada to the Olympics camp last summer - young, big, 6'5 d-men with upside who can skate and put up numbers don't grow on trees) and proposing a Horton for Kaberle swap instead. The Avs are another team with desperate need to add salary to meet the floor, and have already stated they won't dip into free agency because they don't want to handcuff themselves long term with many of their young core becoming RFAs over the next 3 years. That hole will get bigger if they trade Liles and/or trade/buyout Preissing. They also are somewhat thin on the wing, especially in the physical dimension now that Tucker will be gone. Chicago's Versteeg fits that bill. And the Avs have about 257,973 promising offensive Ds in the system, a definite area of weakness in Chicago. I can totally see a deal here. Cap logic also suggests they could be dealing with Calgary, but I don't see much of a fit there, and they are divisional rivals. I can also see the Avs offering Preissing to someone who wants to dump a bigger one-year salary, though i'd be very surprised if there are takers here. - fzusher Sun, 13 Jun 2010 18:02:33 +0100 http://hockey.dobbersports.com/index.php/jeff-angus/2866-draft-day-trades-part-i#comment-6437 They will be in desperate need to add salary to meet the cap floor, but likely not through free-agency because (a) they are not a favored destination for FAs and (b) they only need a short-term fix, as they'll need to leave room to exgtend Bailey, Okposo, Comeau, Gervais, Hillen, and if he makes the team Joensuu in 2011, Tavares in 2012, De Haan, Hamonic, and possibly their 5th overall from this draft in 2013. They therefore should be looking to acquire a heavy but not too long contract or two by trade, though perhaps after July 1st rather than at the draft. Their biggest need is probably a shutdown D who can lead and mentor their young core. Robyn Regehr would have been my candidate from among cap-strapped teams, but I doubt he waives his NMC to spend the next three years on the Isle. I can see them looking into the cheapness of Flames' Cory Sarich / Steve Staios and Hawks' Brent Sopel, but they won't give their 5th overall for any of them, and aren't really that deep in offensive talent in the N or the A to give more than a prospect and/or pick (Joensuu is probably their best trade chip) unless it's for someone of Regehr quality. Personally I also think they could use another top-9 center, but that can be gotten via FA with a bit of overpayment. At any rate, an Isles trade or two are pretty much expected. And Tallon will be looking to, as he has shown in the past, make a major move to revitalize the franchise. Kovalchuk could very well be the answer to that. They have the cap space to sign Kovalchuk to a huge contract, provided ownership gives Tallon the green light to do so, and would land the franchise player they so desperately need. Meanwhile, the Devils receive a goalie prospect who could back up Brodeur as soon as next season and quite possibly eventually replace him (since the Devils lack a decent goalie prospect as of now). And the third round pick completes it. Keep in mind that Bouwmeester's rights were worth only the rights to Leopold and a 3rd rounder, so I think this is totally reasonable. The biggest issues here are that I'm not sure Kovalchuk would want to go back to the Southeast again after all those painful years in Atlanta, and that Florida ownership may not be willing to spend the money they'll need to sign Kovalchuk.
