i am not sure why zetterberg being listed as a LW is such a big deal.. zetterberg took 1098 faceoffs this year and datsyuk took 1070... the case should be made that both should have dual and not that one shouldnt... but trying to get yahoo to make that type of change is useless.. i mean marleau, thornton, and heatley played together most of the year.. and yet none of them are listed as a RW... i dont watch a lot of sharks games.. but i assume that both heatley and marleau arent lining up on the left side together.. lol - sheldon

Don't forget Paajarvi. Better year in the SEL than either Kopitar or Backstrom had at the same age. Both of these other guys came to horrendous teams and made an immediate impact. - Matthew Jackson

You learn something new every day I guess. I see Detroit play so much, I probably should have noticed this. I guess I assumed Z flopped around more. Thanks for showing me the light as always, sentium.

I'll make mention of this when I get to my list of the top 10 centers. - angus

Nope, Dats plays LW in that combo... has done so for years. Why not just include Malkin if you're including Zetterberg? He's played LW for a bigger part of his career compared to Z. Same kind of logic and he's still listed as LW in some places.

I'm just stunned that something that should be common damn knowledge, ESPECIALLY for a hockey nut like you, just doesn't stick after several years. But hey, that was one of my fearless forecasts, that people would stop saying that Hank is a LW. Obviously, that was doomed to fail from the start and I said so too... oh well, at least you didn't spell his name Zetterburg :) - sentium

I concur, Sedin/Parise/Heatley is really close. Lets call them tier 2.

Sedin has the linemates and consistency. Parise has the consistency, but not the linemates (no slight to Zajac). Heatley has the linemates but not the consistency.

I really wanted to put Benn in the top 10, I love his upside. Interesting to see if he moves to C next year. Dallas really likes him there, much like Philly with Giroux. Both are fantastic with the puck, so it is natural you would want them at center (more time with puck on stick).

RW coming next week! I'll try and get a few more surprises in there - not much controversy with the LW top 10... (So far, at least.) - angus

Zetterberg

To be fair to Angus, Zetterberg is still listed (and ONLY listed) as a LW in ESPN fantasy hockey. Regardless of what position he actually plays he is often still listed as a LW in places. - doulos

I came to nitpick, but I generally agree with the list. I think Parise-Heatley is a photo-finish, but the rest are pretty dead-on.

Penner as an honorable mention, maybe? - D M

James - I see a return to LW for Heatley. Don't expect Marleau back in SJ (just a hunch)

I thought Huselius played RW on that line?

Semin is a LW. He only played RW because the best LW in the game is ahead of him. On any other team, he is a LW. I don't see him sticking in WSH long-term either.

tj - thanks for the correction. :)

sentium - I always thought that Zetterberg would play LW when put with Datsyuk? He is primarily a center, true. You watch the Wings more than I do. :)

Darren - thanks! I'll definitely be doing rankings for each position.

As for your question... I'd take Hall.

Okay.......
Anyways, great article Angus. Only change I'd make is flipping Semin and Vanek around and that is very borderline. I love these articles your doing and hope they continue for RW, C and Goal. AWESOME! - Darren

For the 265324665456346523423657865854735623452436374566th time: Henrik Zetterberg is a center. He played LW his first year in the league and after that he's pretty much always played center, just like he's always done outside of the NHL. One goddamn season. Seriously, how does he still get labeled as a LW? How hard is it to understand? Stupid stupid stupid... - sentium

Great list - but where are positions from?

I think the list is spot on - only change I'd make it moving Bobby Ryan down, just based on his struggles when not playing with Getzlaf and Perry. Ballsy putting Heatley at #5, which is exactly where I'd have him but I know a lot of people still see him at #2.

Only complaint is that 4 out of the 10 aren't actually LW'ers anymore. Heatley, Nash and Semin have all played RW this season and Zetterberg has played C.

I imagine your positions are just based on Yahoo or some commonly-used/little updated site, but just wanted to point this out!

Again, great rankings! - James Martin

I think the article got cut off? It looks like there was more to be said about Eriksson, and I'm not sure if you had more guys listed on the honorable mention part too... - duballstar014
