"Upside"?

Thanks for responding to my comment. You wrote: "I don't think Keith will get as many points next year... Just a hunch."

Isn't that very different from "upside"? I guess I don't understand the meaning of upside if you're referring more to immediate point projections. I wouldn't predict 70 for Keith next season myself, but I'm just confused when you say his "upside" is 65. What does that even mean? - D M

I really like Ehrhoff - like I said, lots of great d-men get left off of the list of only 10.

Phaneuf I was debating, but he needs a big bounce back season in 2010-11 first.

Hedman... probably 45 points within the next three years. Could be a higher obviously, a lot depends on the role TB wants him to play. - angus

Beauty! Now I can trade off the hype this article will create for Yandle and Karlsson and pick up fantasy monsters like Chara and Phaneuf. My league counts PIMs. - Atomic Wedgy

Very close to bang on (IMO).
Green
Doughty
Keith
Markov
Boyle
Weber
Kronvall
Kaberle
Myers
Streit

Bow as far as [rospects who will make a top 5-7 impact next year? Both Karlsson and Carlson.

JJ is a good young defenseman - could work his way on here. Lots of good players left off when only selecting 10.

I don't think Keith will get as many points next year. The cap is going to hurt the Hawks from an offensive depth standpoint, and I don't see him being as productive without more PP time. Just a hunch. - angus

I sure hope the Pens don't entertain the idea of trading Goligoski. Even if they re-sign Gonchar for another year or two, once he's gone, I don't think Letang has the PP skills that Gonchar or Goligoski do - Dean Read

Sorry in advance for leaving negative feedback, but how in the world is Duncan Keith's short term upside lower than his actual point totals from this season?! Makes no sense whatsoever.

He gets 69 this year, but 65 is the best case scenario next year, and 70 is the best case for the next three? What? - D M

Heh, just kidding...

But what about JJ? He's looked quite good paired up with Doughty. Like Hedman, a few years away? Or like J-Bo, too hyped? - tradejunkie

Hey Jeff,

Great list. I was wondering how far off the bubble Erhoff and Pitkanen would be? Erhoff seems to have developed well in Vancouver on a great team and Pitkanen sure logged a ton of minutes this year are a terrible Canes team.

Certainly not sexy picks....

Thanks,

Karlsson actually plays with the same if not more of an edge than Green...he actually goes after offensive players and plays physically...if that's what you mean by "edge". - Big Ev

About the only one that I really don't want is Visnovsky. I've been playing in a salary cap for some time, so I certainly have some different views as to the exact order. Salary cap perverts things a whole bunch though. Visnovsky is great potential, but he just doesn't get the job done to suit me. Too many injuries. Health factors tremendously into my views though. 41, 31, 45 over the last three years and age is now 34.

Gonchar, without a contract. Health has been an issue, but one can't bellyache too much about a guy that hasn't been below 50 points in a decade. Still highly productive. He's a good buy low candidate right now, if you're willing to take the chance!

I'm wondering if Edler, Phaneuf, J. Johnson, Campbell about being bubble guys. Liddy & Neidermeyer are still pretty interesting. - Jocular Hockey Manager

Kulikov definitely bears watching - he played incredibly well considering the team he was on. Gonchar is a spot on comparison in terms of playing style. - angus

Great article. Rankings seemed to be in order.

I was a bit surprised with Yandle's high ranking especially with OEL in their sytem but overall I agree with them all.

Thanks - Princeton

Another guy for the radar for in a couple years is Kulikov. He's more of a Gonchar-esq type dman with a big howie. One of the few bright spots on Florida. - BGJ
