I live in Toronto, Logan. I'm pretty clear on the Leafs situation ;). Kessel only slumped after 20 solid games of clicking with Stajan. When Bozak clicked with Kessel it was not as much - but it was okay - and it was not as many games. - Dobber

I hear what you're saying about Kessel/Stajan, but if I'm not mistaken they were only "reunited" for 1 game. Prior to that it was Kessel with Bozak and while Bozak might not have had as many points as Stajan, it was that line pairing (Kulemin / Bozak / Kessel) that seemed to pull Kessel out of his slump. He still wasn't scoring a ton but at least he was getting on the score sheet on a more consistent basis. With Stajan it seemed that he'd score quite a bit, then absolutely nothing for 2 weeks at a time. With Bozak at least he was getting an assist here and there, the odd goal, etc. He just seemed a little more consistent... though that doesn't necessarily translate to more points overall. - Logan

Logan - Stajan played with Kessel last game and scored two goals on their first two shifts together. Bozak, this year, is not as good as Stajan. It's going to hurt his production. Bozak may have six points in 11 games playing on a line with Kessel, but in the 30 or so games that Stajan played with Kessel, Stajan had 30 points and Kessel's numbers reflect that. Check our Frozen Pool section for proof.

Giordano points - all are valid. You guys could be correct. But my theory is that Giordano had it real good and anything that could disrupt that can't exactly help. A shakeup like this may hurt. We'll see. - Dobber

Not sure how anyone (including you, Dobber?) can think this hurts Kessel? One commenter suggested it hurts him because Stajan was a "key linemate", but Kessel's been playing on a line with Bozak and Kulemin and they've really clicked well together. Stajan was with Poni and Hagman, so if this hurts anyone on the Leafs it's Ponikarovsky.

The only way this could possibly hurt Kessel is that there's less depth on the roster for opposing teams to focus on, so they can devote more energy to shutting down Kessel. But as far as losing Stajan and Hagman, that has very little to do with Kessel at all, except for a little on the PP. - Logan

How do the Leafs trades impact his fantasy value over the next 2-3 years? I know he has played a bit on the top line lately but he's bounced up and down a bit, and now Hagman and Blake (and soon Poni) are gone with nobody really coming back to challenge him at LW (Sjostrom doesn't count). Losing Stajan doesn't help him but it seems he has a much better hold on a top-six spot for the next little while. - barneyg

Burke needs congratulated for landing a struggling potential All Star in Phaneuf.

Sjostrom may benefit. Some guys need to end up in the right place. Seems like he's using up a bunch of places though.

Aulie is a depth prospect that's too far down the road to have much opinion on. Anywhere from an eventual 4-5 D-man to a permanent wanna-be. His size is intriguing. Hope his feet match.

The Flames took quite a risk really.

Stajan has looked really good over the last 1-1/2 seasons. A break through to 50 points and then supporting that theory this season. One does get to wonder that he has a 70 point season in the future. Should he click with Iggy... (is this the 10th guy in that lineup?)

Hagman is an honest warrior, at a prime point in his career to play an important role in a playoff run. He's also the kind of guy, that penciled into the lineup incorrectly, can seemingly disappear.

White can adjust seamlessly, or go all to pieces in a day. Younger and just getting nicely established, this rocks his world. Chances are the Flames give him substantial opportunity and he transitions smoothly. I hope the coaching staff in Calgary loves his enthusiasm and fails to see his size. He's the type of player that needs to grow on you. You think he can't, he can't, he can't... but he's more parts 'The Little Train that Could' than anything else.

I suspect the Leafs should eventually win this deal, but their new man (Phaneuf) must refind himself, while the Flames have three guys who currently feel good about their game, coming into their lineup. - Jocular Hockey Manager

Hey Dobber,

I can't understand your reasoning behind the statement that Gio's PP time would slip and that he will be the most negatively affected by the trade? I thought he was QB'ing the PP in CAL for a couple of weeks now and far outperforming both JBo and Phaneuf offensively. He has been dynamite and I just don't see how White can possibly take over as the #1 PP guy as he was not that even in TO? Yes he will add a new dimension to the PP...but displace Gio? that doesn't seem plausible. I think this trade was made plausible DUE TO Gio's emergence on the blue line as a great offensive threat.

Your comments please. - amyn

Put me down as another who sees just the opposite effect on Giordano. I agree with others that he's largely why Phaneuf was expendable. Dobb, I'm sure you see lots of White and you're not the only one who has raved about his play this year, but, each time I've seen the Flames or talked to anyone that sees lots of those games, its Giordano that gets talked about as the Flames best defenseman on the season. I think he has first dibs on the PP over White and White will replace him on the second unit. In any event, I don't see how White gets more PP time than Phaneuf was getting, thus, at worst, Giordano is in the same spot he was. - Kraftster

I have to disagree; I don't htink this will hurt Gio at all. He has the inside track on the PP time and will have to screw it up to let White have a chance. I am a huge Flames fan and a huge Leafs hater (most of it towards the poor management over the years) so I'm not sure what to do with my CGY #3 jersey. Does this mean I'm a Leafs fan now!? My head hurts. - JBrit

Pretty sure this can't hurt Kessel any more than simply being on the Leafs has hurt him. Maybe Phaneuf will help all of the forwards left on the Leafs. I really hope Hagman gets a top 2 line chance in Calgary. - robert scriban

As a Flames fan this obviously hurts initially. The idea of losing a young stud D is not cool, but there are some nice pieces coming back that should fill out the top 2 lines. Not sure where I see Hagman fitting in. That should be interesting. I think Brent is going to roll with Jokinen on the top line and just hope that he gets rolling enough to boost his trade value. I'm with Tyson though...I don't see this hurting Giordano at all. In fact I think this shows how much the Flames value Gio. I like White, he's a decent top 4 guy, but I think this solidifies Giordano and Bouwmeester on the top PP. - Curtis Anderson

I think this helps the young TO forwards more, Stalberg in addition to Bozak listed above. Very good trade for TO, they can now flip 6 of their 18 defensemen left for some more forwards... but until this happens I'm curious to see what Stalberg and Bozak can do with increased PP time. Dobber, what is the status of Hagman, Stajan, and White's contracts? Are they rentals or will Calgary have them for another year or 2? - Brendan Connolly

I can't see any way that they break up Calgary's second line (Bourque, Langkow and Dawes) when Dawes returns from his injury. I'm hoping this means that Jokinen's on the third line or about to be traded. They have been trying to keep the second line in tact all year, but that meant Conroy was with Iginla, so they needed another C - hence I'm guessing Stajan's the top C. Hopefully Calgary can pull off a Jokinen trade next. - Mabus

I'm not sure that this hurts Giordano. I think his rise this year is what made Phaneuf expendable. White is a great d-man but is he likely to take more PP time from Gio than Gio will gain from Phaneuf not being there? I don't see it.
At worst White lines up with J-Bo on the first PP unit and Gio is on the 2nd like he was most of the year. At best Gio and J-Bo are on the first unit, and that's an upgrade from what Gio has been doing for most of the year.
I think this trade helps Bouwmeester a lot, he is almost for-sure 1st PP unit now... - Tyson
