I thought Ben was suggesting that draft position was the thing that torpedoed Couture's chance at junior team and how high he was drafted in the NHL. He said nothing about the Couture camp's reaction to Tavares going No. 1. That was mostly his dad, by the way, and not so much Logan. Even still, Hockey Canada picked Logan for the U-18 team that went to Finland in 2007 and he attended the junior tryout camp in August of that year. If Hockey Canada held a grudge against Couture because of something that was said about the CHL, OHL, or Dave Branch, they didn't show it then. Perhaps it played a factor, but I'm of the belief that it was his age (18) and play in Finland that kept him off the 2008 team and poor play in the first half of last season that kept him off the team in his final year of junior. - Ryan Van Horne

The reason Couture didn't make the junior team is the same reason as Wolski didn't, politics. I gotta side with Ben when he says Tavares going #1 in the OHL draft was a huge reason he never made the WJC team. He was one of the top 2-way guys in the CHL from his rookie season on. The one thing holding him back, besides a cut leg, was the fact him and his family publicly lambasted the OHL and David Branch. Not exactly a god way to get in their good books. Can't blame him though, Oshawa had promised to draft him, regardless if Tavares was in the draft or not. Anyway, I guess when you know the guy you feel more obliged to stand up for him. - goavsgo

Nothing against Couture

I should also add that I drafted Couture in my fantasy league when he was 15 based on the recommendation of my brother who saw him play minor hockey with my nephew.

I also saw Couture play and met him when he was 15 and playing for the St. Thomas (Junior B) stars. Obviously, I've got nothing against Logan and wish him good health and nothing but the best.

I was disappointed -- but not surprised -- when he didn't even get an invite to the tryout camp for the Canadian junior team that hosted last year's tournament in Ottawa. He was struggling at the start of last season. I'm sure he was disappointed, too, and I was glad to see his response to the snub, even though I had already sacrificed him in a trade with a rebuilding team. - Ryan Van Horne

My apologies. When I saw the title "Band-Aid Boys in Training" and a picture of my good friend Logan Couture under the title, well, I put 2 and 2 together and figured you were calling him one (a band-aid boy).

If he went first overall he would've had a much better chance of making the squad or at least would've been given more opportunity to do so. - Ben

Ben,
You can say Tavares was the reason why Couture wasn't taken first overall in the OHL draft, but he had nothing to do with Couture not playing for Team Canada at the world junior and nothing to do with how high he was drafted.

As for your last comment, please re-read the story. At no point in the story do I call Couture a Band-Aid Boy. I say that he has a history of injuries that have cut into his playing time. He had two concussions -- one of them pretty serious -- and a knee injury. The mono, I don't consider an injury because so many hockey players get it. Though it did put him out for a while.

This lack of playing time stalled his development in junior. He clearly regressed in his third season because of it. He bounced back nicely in his fourth year, though.

I'm just holding a red flag up. If Couture turns out to be injury prone as an NHLer, don't say I didn't warn you it might happen. - Ryan Van Horne

Couture was always suppose to turn into a star. If it wasn't for Tavares he would've gone 1st in the OHL draft, played for team Canada at the WJC, and would've been taken higher in the NHL draft. Bandaid boy? I didn't know getting cut by a skate and mono = bandaid boy. - Ben
