RE: Oilers

The thing is I don't know if you can entirely blame the lack of offense, they did have an average of 2.87 G/game which was 16th at the time of the article... Granted the last few games where the offense has died certainly resulted in a few losses, but at the end of the day a top goalie will pull out wins no matter what team is in front of them. If we had a Ryan Miller, a Cristobal Huet, or a Craig Anderson, we'd be 4-5 games above 500, not right on 500, is my main argument.

Even the Preds and their woeful offense, which scores almost 0.8 goals less per contest than the Oilers are 6-6-1... Jersey scores a full half a goal less than the Oilers are 8-4-0.

You can certainly say that the offense does play a part in his record, but if Khabibulin was anywhere near his 2.33, .919 numbers from last season, we'd be where Colorado is right now... - Ryan Ma

RE: Kipper

Great find on the info on Kipper, Yadba. The thing for me is that even if they were planning on scaling back Kipper's starts, you would think they'd start right from the get go, not start him in 11 of 12 and then taper him off later on. And from the reports at the beginning of the year the Sutter's were thinking like 60-65 starts, which would have been a dramatic cut, even with the heavy November schedule it still looks like they're still planning 65-70, which I think will still wear him out if you add in the Olympic workload.

Also my bad on the Finland comment... I was actually in Torino at the time and watched a few games, I should've known better. Good catch! - Ryan Ma

RE: Theo

I'm certainly not the one to ask regarding Varly... I'm a big Theo (contract year) fan, and was pretty much flying the lone Theo flag last season. If you search the forum history of "Gotlaid + Theo" you'll probably find my opinion of Varly.

All I know is that Theo is a completely different monster come contract year time, and that it will be highly unlikely that they keep him stapled to the bench even if he struggles.

You're probably better off asking Justin Goldman, he's a way better goalie analysts than I ever will be, regarding development patterns and so on. - Ryan Ma

RE: Curley

For keeper I think Pavelec probably is your best bet, a lot of the other guys that you mentioned don't really have that much job security. Raycroft I don't think will remain a Nuck with Schneider there, Conks has number 1 talent, but I don't know if any teams really have a number 1 spot available... Howard is also a ? in Detroit...

Pavelec is probably the safest bet.

Nice job, Ryan. Thanks a lot.

Only thing I personally disagree with is the Oilers. Khabi's not the reason they're losing, no offense and weak defense of late has been their downfall.

Thanks again! - Jake

The flames have had a really easy schedule lately (5 home games in 21 days) thats why we havent seen much of McElhinney. Which im sure will change coming up as November has 14 games in 24 days (with 3 back2back sets).
Also Sweden is the reigning gold medal team not Finland(silver).

Other than that great article. - Yadba

Nice article, Ryan. I just traded for Hiller (gave Huselius and Ferraro) and I'm hoping for good things from him going forward. - sentium

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the article. Well done and good food for thought.

Maybe you could comment on a goalie question that I have. I own Varlamov and I've read the differences of opinion regarding when/if he takes over the no.1 job in Washington.
My question is -- developmentally, is it better for Varlamov to NOT win over the no.1 job at such a young age? Wouldn't it be better for Theodore to run with 50 games this year and bring Varlamov along slowly?
What does history suggest?

Thoughts?

Good Job ryan..
Wondering if you can give me some advise. I currently have Gustavsson(Tor) as my 2nd goalie, and have a choice in my pool for Raycroft, Pavelec, Conklin, or Howard.. Any suggestions? Keeper League.. - Curley

Excellent breakdown, and I totally agree with your rationale here in a one-year league...

Garon, Conklin, and JDD are all worthy investments at this point... - shook81
