RE: Kipper

Most leagues which count goalies stats in a default 6x4 setting use GAA and sv%, I'm surprised you don't think those are normal stats.

Also relying on the reason that it was the Flames poor play that led to that lost, and it's not Kipper is like burying your head in the sand. As bad as a team plays in front of them, the goalie has the responsibility of trying to steal the win. Top-tier goalies go out and do that, second tiered goalies do that most of the time, your middle-tiers do it half of the time, and your bottom tiered goalies don't do it at all.

For me there are really only 2 goalies possibly 3, but I'd want to see more evidence from Mason, that I would called top-tier clear-cut above the rest type goalies, who are good across-the-board.

At the end of the day you just can't call a goalie with a 3.31 GAA along with a .903 sv% a top-tiered goalie. - Ryan Ma

GAA and save%? Who uses those ridiculous stats in pools anyways?

Calgary lost that game because they played on their heals....it wasn't Kipper's fault..but keep checking those boxscores. - BGJ

RE: Kipper

He isn't... Yes he'll get wins, but if you have to sacrifice GAA and sv% in order to get wins you're giving up 2 stats for 1...

Top-tiered to me means he's going to be good across the board, meaning he won't hurt your team in other stats.

Luongo is top-tiered, Brodeur is top tiered... Nabby and his relatively weak sv% is not...

Saying Kipper is top-tiered material because of his starts and wins, is like saying Henrik Sedin is a top-tiered center because he plays all 82 games in a year and can tally 82 points.

I'm sorry a top-tiered goalie doesn't lose a 5-0 game no matter how poorly the team in front of him is playing...

RE: rticinelli

It's obvious to us, because Dobber and I have been selling the "magical fourth year" Kool-Aid for quite some time, so you've kinda been overly exposed to the hype. The general fantasy hockey player probably still hasn't picked up on the hype just yet. According to Yahoo he's the 88.6th pick which is in the 7.8 round. He's still lumped with guys like Krecji, Stamkos, Frolik, Tavares, Zajac and Ribeiro, so even though it's obvious for us to pick him as a big breakout candidate a lot of the general public didn't.

Is it an obvious choice for a somewhat knowledgeable fantasy player? probably, but it's not general knowledge for a newbie.

I like to toot my own horn every once in a while, I don't do it very often, but if I generally make a big hit in one of my predictions, I think that's fair enough...

Next up: Bobby Ryan and Varlamov... - Ryan Ma

RE: Pouliot/Sheppard

I personally don't think they ever reach breakout numbers. Pouliot really had a good junior career playing alongside Crosby. Watching him play in a Oilers uniform for a few years I really didn't see much upside in him. It also depends on what you classify as a breakout, if you're thinking 40? then probably just cause someone has to start scoring in Minny... I think he's a career 3rd liner/AHLer...

Sheppard is more of a two-way type guy than a game-breaking scorer. He did have a solid junior career, and I'll be honest I haven't actually seen him play in very many games so I'm not the best judge of character. He's really only entering his third season this year, and generally speaking people break out in their 4th so I'll probably save the breakout season prediction for next year. - Ryan Ma

"He topped my list in the off-season as the top player to keep an eye out for in their 'magical fourth year' and so far he’s making me look like a genius."

You say genius... I say Captain Obvious!...

Thanks for the lunch time read, Ryan. - rticinelli

One quick question concerning Minny: Do you think Pouloit, and even more so Sheppard, will ever step it up this season?

Here is a quote from rotoworld:
'The Wild will look to James Sheppard and Benoit Pouliot to help them get over injuries to forwards Cal Clutterbuck (ankle), Pierre-Marc Bouchard (head) and Petr Sykora (groin).
"You've got your big lines and your big-time players that we need more out of, without question, but there's an opportunity now for Pouliot and Sheppard to step up," coach Todd Richards said. Pouliot has one assist in three games this season, while Sheppard has no points in four contests.'

I like the sounds of it, but i have little to no faith in those guys rights now. Hell, I even dropped Sheppard for the frustratingly inconsistent Clarke MacArthur last night. At least for the time being.
