Are you saying that Murphy might beat out Leighton for backup spot? That's interesting. - Ed

fzusher: Eaves can't and won't beat out Helm for a spot. First of all, Helm is a center and Eaves is a winger and secondly, Babcock is completely in love with Helm. If we're talking a fourth line spot, the main competition for Eaves is Maltby.

I posted a thread with the Detroit training camp lines yesterday in the News forum if you want some more info. - sentium

Dorsett

Dorsett just signed a two-year extension (2010-2012) that according to capgeek is one-way. Add that to what seems to be an extra focus on physicality in rookie camp, and the fact that Dorsett did prove he can play a regular shift last year, and I am not so convinced he's the drop candidate to make room for Filatov. But I agree they aren't likely to demote him this year. It wouldn't surprise me if they first try to showcase Modin and then peddle him off for a D (especially since they have cap room galore). Dorsett will be demoted if that doesn't pan out.

A few other points:

BOS - Recchi and Wheeler can play RW as well, allowing BOS, to trade Kessel for a close prospect who'll replace Recchi after he retires. Their cap situation could yet cause the trade or waiving of Kobasew, especially if he is outplayed by these players, making an extra spot for them.

BUF - I think there are 2 different competitions here: Macarthur vs. Gerbe vs. Paille vs. Cowan vs. Ellis for the 3rd and 4th line LW spots, and Kaleta vs. Cowan for the 4th line RW spot. I can't see Macarthur or Gerbe on the 4th line, or Cowan or Ellis on the 3rd, but Paille could play either and is the wild card here. McCormick should cement the 4th line C while Mair is injured, but when Mair comes back, if McCormick (who can also play wing) acquits himself enough and whoever wins LW and RW initially falters, they could lose their spot.

COL - I can see all three making the team with the odd man out being David Koci. It would mean Stoa centering a 4th line with McLeod and Jones or Stewart. Of course, this all assumes Duchene is assured a spot.

DAL - Again, I can see a scenario with both Benn and Brunnstrom in the top-9, with the losers being Ott (demoted back to 4th line) and one of Sutherby or Petersen losing their 4th line spot. But it'd take a real monster camp from Benn for that to happen, and he didn't have a monster Traverse City tournament.

DET - For Eaves' ability to play a checking role to help him he'd have to outplay Helm. You can add Bertuzzi to the potential injury list.

FLA - There could be room for both if they opt to continue the Horton at center experiment, which is a possibility given that otherwise Reinprecht is their no. 2 C (which also means Matthias, with a very strong camp, could create a competition for that spot). - fzusher

Trotz himself said one or two weeks ago that he intends to give Mike Santorelli ample time as the second line RW in camp to see if he can stick.

Can't wait to see what happens with Filatov, MacArthur, SKost and Dadonov. Backlund too, I suppose, but I think he plays at least half the season in the AHL. - sentium

Santorelli isn't even in the conversation when we talk about Nashville?
I had read some good stuff about him in the forums and thought he would stand a chance considering the lack of depth at forward.
Of coarse if they do infact get Kessel into the fold the fight for a job will be all that much tougher. - BDog

How much of these roster decisions are given the proper consideration? By that I mean, its rarely based on skill level, or who earns the spot, but rather, what the team has invested, or is paying a certain player. Afterall the GM doesn't want to look silly, but the worth candidate is sometime left on the outside looking in. - Puckhead
