Blake will certainly have less ice this season 21:26 last year and going down every year. Vlasic will be the first to eat up more time. And yes tehy need more depth but I suspect that they think that Joslin may be ready to make the jump. - Mille Feuilles

Cheechoo is an expensive gamble. I wouldnt touch him with a ten foot Northland!
Heatley for Kessel doesnt work for Boston salary wise, Heatley for Marleau is doable atleast, but Heatleys contract is a tuff one to swallow for most teams. The ones that want to spend to the cap- already have,so a similar caphit would have to return. - Larry

Why deal with the Heatley headache when they could trade Cheechoo and a mid rd pick for Kessel, sign him for 4.0M, and still have 600K+ of wiggle room to improve down the stretch? Remember, Boston and SJ love to trade with each other and a 28 yr old Cheechoo makes for a great reclamation project locked in at 3.5M for the next 2 seasons in Boston...the same 3.5M Kessel turned down!!! Now whose with me on this??? - Aaron Gaither

Terrible deal, why free up cap space for a Western Team to acquire Heatley?

Vancouver doesn't have a problem with Defensive depth they have a problem with top end offensive D... this solves nothing and perpetuates a solid D core that costs them against teams with skill and speed. - pudge

Kessel + draft picks for Heatley, or Marleau for Heatley two great opportunities for both teams. No matter which way it might go Heatley needs to be moved before the start of the season or that dressing room is messed up big time!! - Irvin Penner

It's amazing how few offensive prospects San Jose have in their organization. White was looking like a total dog but he's going to be given every opportunity to succeed in SJ. A match made in heaven and something of a re-birth for White's fantasy value. Someone in SJ sees hope for the kid. - Stuart McDonald

Like I said, more to come.

- Edler won't be dealt. 100% untouchable.
- Bieksa will dip in pts. 1st unit = Salo/Schneider, 2nd = Edler/Bieksa/Ehrhoff
- Bieksa kicked off top unit with Salo. But Salo and Schneider are both injury prone.

- Canucks are over the cap, not significantly. Lots of options. - Jeff Angus

I put a fuller analysis in the thread about this deal in the forum; bottom lines:

Sharks are now missing a 4th top-4 D and Eric Daoust is absolutely right about their cap situation - they still need to move major salary if they acquire Heatley. If they don't sign a veteran bottom-3 D (Wilson in a press release, talks about this being a vote of confidence in the players in the system) Mike Moore could slot into the no. 7 frequent scratch D spot.

Nucks are now over the cap without counting Schneider, Hodgson, and Shirokov. Edler for forward trade wouldn't surprise me now. - fzusher

@ Eric - but something would have to go the other way for Heater, no? I mean, I'll give you that if that something is not Marleau they'd have some work to do to get under the cap, but, freeing up $4.6 without taking anything back sure goes a long way towards making it work. Perhaps its Kessel they target. In any event, that's about as much cap room as we've seen opened up in a single transaction since the cap. - Kraftster

salo,bieska,mitchell,edler,schenieder,lukowich,erhoff,obrien

i see a lot of scratches for erhoff, but than again this is kinda smart with salo and bieska always missing games. but man did we have to take on 4.6 mil... - nicky

Tough deal to analyze right now to be honest as it has future implications for both teams. More to come. - Jeff Angus

I doubt the Heatley stuff materializes. I looked over at CapGeek with the new changes in effect (assuming they re-sign Mitchell at his QO) and they have around 2.8 in cap space with 3-4 roster spots still needing to be filled. Could Chelios be their new #6 dman? But all-in-all, they'll either have a ton of young players filling in the last roster spots or they'll sign a few fringe vets for minimum contracts, but in either case there isn't a lot of wiggle room to bring in Heatley. - Eric Daoust

Well, geeze. Schneider too. What the heck does that do to this whole situation? Edler is the real unknown here. He has never been so offensive as he ended up being last year. There's some concern here in my opinion, that Edler might even fall short of last year's numbers, but, at best be in the 35-40 range again. - Kraftster

Interesting how Heatley was paired with Joe T in yesterdays Team Canda game. I really think this opens the door to finally get the deal done. - Bill

I think this trade really opens doors for Vlasic. Look for more PP time, increased role, and such. This should add about 3-5 more pts for Mr Pickles. - nuran
