Fz, can you tell me please exactly how many rangers games you saw last year ?

saying that Callahan is the best fit for the 4th line makes me think you saw them play about zero times :)

the guy never seems to give up on the play, and has been rewarded with additional ice time and the responsibility that comes with it. Saying he will be moved to the 4th line flies in the face of logic. Its already been mentioned that coach just loves the kid too. Since Callahan outscored Lisin and has already played under coach Torts, it would appear he has the inside shot at the greater ice time than Lisin does anyway ...

Yes Dobber, I know Betts is UFA, but perhaps others don't ? He and Sjostrom were really effective on the PK last season for the blueshirts.

Sadly the economics of the cap and the rangers somewhat pathetic state of managing the cap means Betts has to wait for the other RFAs (Dubinsky) to resign before knowing if they can afford to bring him back to Gotham.

Until then Boyle appears to have the 4th line job, or even the 3rd if he can prove himself in camp and somehow Anisimov cannot handle the adjustment to the NHL as smoothly as many in rangerland hope. - donpaulo

you're crazy if you think the Rangers will put a 24 goal scorer who is 23 years old, a coach's favorite and one of the hardest workers on the ice back to the first line. Callahan has a top 9 role sown up and probably a top 6 role, though he is certainly cpaable of being effective on the third line. There is no chance, even outside chance of him being on the fourth line. He will also be on the PP and PK as well, Torts loves this guy and I agree with him. - bogans

what i haven't really seen here, is how this will affect avery's value (if any)?

in the guide you suggested that avery may get 50+ points, 2nd LW duty, and 2nd PP duty.

With the addition of another "skilled" left winger, does he get bumped down to 3rd line, no powerpaly duty, and possibly less points? - lanky522

Kotalik and Lisin are more offensive in their game than Callahan and also have higher offensive talent. They are just not the right fit for the 4th line, but barring a very bad camp I can't see TortSather sending Lisin to the minors to make room for Voros, Parenteau, Ambuhl or Rissmiller. By contrast, Callahan beats Kotalik and LIsin in the tenacity, forecheck, workrate, and defense departments. He gets the 4th line job by default - he's just the best suited for it of their NHL RWs. - fzusher

FZ you made some good points, but I have to call you on saying Callahan will play on the 4th line in NY. Thats not going to happen.

Right now I see the pairings as
Gaborik and Prospal
Drury and Kotalik
Avery and Callahan

With Higgins, Dubinsky, Anisimov fitting in as coach sees fit

my preference is
Dubinsky with Gaborik and Prospal
Drury with Kotalik and Higgins
Anisimov with Callahan and Avery
Boyle with Brash and most likely Lisin

although I would like to see NY make some space for Blair Betts, he was a huge part of the very effective PK last year. - donpaulo

And one more interesting double competition among forwards in Rangers camp will be between Voros, Rissmiller, Parenteau and Ambuhl for that almost guaranteed roster spot known as the 'Gaborik injury call up' spot, and between Kotalik and Lisin for the 'Gaborik injury top line promotion' spot.

Don't forget Prospal can also play C, and may very well be the best natural passer among Rangers NHLers. And with Torts and Sather adding Brashear and Higgins in the offseason they may very well be looking at having size on every line. With the Dubinsky contract talks already tricky now (he may end up just signing his one-year qualifying offer) it may make sense for them to not give him quality minutes so as to lower his numbers.

So I can see the top line there as being Higgins and Gaborik centered by Prospal, with Drury centering Avery and Kotalik, Dubinsky centering Lisin and Grachev, and Boyle centering Callahan and Brashear. If Prospal plays on the wing then indeed Dubinsky moves into the top 6 and him or Drury get the top line job, which would push Avery or Higgins to the 3rd line, Grachev out of the line up, and Anisimov or Arnason back into it.

Bottom line - I agree with Dobber that it'll come down to a competition between Grachev, Anisimov and Arnason over one third line spot, but the competition will be determined not only on the basis of how the three play in camp but on how the first line shapes up. - fzusher
