Thanks JG. I am somewhat worried about him publically saying he wanted 50-55 games from his normal 70+. But, it sounds like Varlamov/Rinne would not be THAT big of an upgrade for the next 1-2 yrs until Bernier is ready for LA. - bluejays

bluejays, if you have Bernier, then Turco will provide plenty of stop-gap insurance until next season. I would just hang on to Turco because he could have a very good "bounce-back" year. In fact, for all the people that think Carey Price is going to bounce back with strong numbers, they better expect to see Turco do something similar. I would hold off, especially since Bernier will be playing with the Kings for the 2010-11 season. - Justin Goldman

Justin,
What do you see from Turco next year and his remaining time in the NHL? Have we seen his best years? I have the ability to upgrade Varlamov or Rinne for him or stay a float with Turco and wait for Bernier. Its based on wins, SO, and shots.
PS The guy I could p/u for that upgrade would probably be a Duchene or Krejci, so it has to be worth while. - bluejays

Ron, Erik Ersberg is probably considered a 3rd goalie in the fantasy realm and I think he'd make a great one. I would say Scott Clemmensen in Florida is a good one if Vokoun struggles like he did last year. Peter Budaj makes a great backup, and then I would say Brian Elliott is one of the best values out there. I could name more but yeah those are the first that come to mind. - Justin Goldman

Justin if someone was looking for a third goalie that will have production this year do you have any suggestions? Not the next best prospect, but a backup that will get enough time to contribute. I have my own thoughts, but wondered what you are thinking. - Ron Cover

Price should rebound, provided the Habs rebound as a team unified. The mess that was MTL last season was a complete distraction imo. Hence the semi-house cleaning in the off season. Veterans let go because they didn't step up, or have the skills to right the ship imo. The team needs direction and directions to tonights party isn't it. - Ron Cover

Rad, there are some situations that could arise where Halak has the opportunity to take over Price. Unfortunately, I think the coaching staff is set on Price being "the kid" no matter what, whereas Halak will be seen as "a great backup with a great future" in the league. I don't think they realize just HOW good Halak can/will be. That being said, I doubt Halak will ever supplant Price for good, especially based on skill alone...mainly because Halak won't play enough minutes. - Justin Goldman

Hey Justin,

What do you think about Halak? Does he have a chance of supplanting Price in Montreal if he falters again? This was one kid I traded a significant asset for at the end of last season..part of the trade was need as I had two starters go down, but I was hoping for a bright future from Halak.

Thanks,

Paul, getting JS cheap is a great deal because yes, he is still one of the top butterfly goalies in the league. But like you said, he is still the same guy from years past. To me, that's one of the problems. He has not adjusted his "blocking" style/technique to suit the current level of play. I think his game is slowly going to start to weaken until he takes a summer to really change some aspects of his positioning and movement. Just my 2 pennies! - Justin Goldman

Oh sorry, I thought you were blaming Giggy's bad play for his off-ice issues and he will be back next year and the clrear cut number one. Don't scare me Justin, HAHA. I just traded for him.

I should read the whole article next time. Bad Zorro. - Troy Williams

I picked up JSG in a keeper league last year on the cheap for exactly the reason mentioned. The guy is still the same player as before, he just lost his dad and the season fell apart on him. IMO he is still the same guy from years past. - paul

Troy, not sure where you are getting that. Hiller already blew Giguere out of the water. In fact, the goal of this article is to help you figure out how to find the NEXT Hiller. - Justin Goldman

Troy - I think what Justin (not Dobber, lol) is saying is that Hiller didn't take over the starters role in Anaheim due to simply outplaying J.S., but took advantage of the oppourtunity, as J.S.'s game fell apart due to personal issues, not technical ability.
I think you are correct in saying that Jiggy is done in Ana, or at least, will have to really outplay Hiller to regain the starter's role. Hope that clears things up a bit. - loco man

So are you saying, dobber, don't count on Hiller taking over for Giguere? I think with the money Giguere is making and the way Hiller played in the playoffs Giggy is almost done in Anaheim. I might be a little confused here?? - Troy Williams
