Any thought on the recent Markov signing?

Dobber says bye-bye to Souray. If so, who in the Habs is going to take his impressive goal numbers?

Nobody. There isn\'t a free agent of Souray\'s caliber to be found, and that includes Markov. Not that they have the cap space left; the amount they ponied up for AM blows my mind. Though as a Boston native, I think I\'ll survive the heartbreak...

Part of me wonders if there was more to this story than anybody is aware of. Why spend that much on Markov instead of Souray, unless the latter had made it clear that he wanted a change in scenery?

Markov was the priority over Souray because Markov is a complete player. He is good at everything (PP, Sh) + he is playing against the best offensive lines. And he is a hard worker too. Souray is a big part of the succes of Montreal, and i still think they should re-sign him too, but he is really bad in a one on one. - 28 +/- last year compare to + 2 for Markov.

Anyway Souray is gone for a good reason: His wife is pregnant again (2nd time) and she want to stay in California. He is gone.

But the amount they paid him? It would be one thing if he\'d carried them into the playoffs, but that was not the case. Now they\'ve got this massive contract hanging over their heads for the forseeable future. It\'s a lot easier to replace a Markov with a couple of stable defensemen than it is to replace a top-scoring PP quarterback like Souray.

5 mil per might be a stretch...however i think its money better spent on the more complete player in markov then the one dimensional, power play specialist, defensive liability that is sheldon souray - im no habs fan but let some other team be foolish enough to give him that kind of money- i dunno call me crazy but i prefer my dmen to help keep the puck out of my own net then only score on the pp

Totally agree! As an Habs fan, I saw both of them play and even if I think he\'ll be a bit too much paid, I prefer Markov because he\'s simply a better player.

\'my other sock\' and \'Chicleteur\':

From a fantasy perspective I don\'t much care what their defensive game is, in my pool, all I care about is the points that they put up.

Sure, but I\'m not sure Souray will have another season like he had last year... That\'s another reason why I said I prefer Markov.

I agree that Markov has been paid a lot. Souray\'s numbers in the plus/minus category was awful, and some could say that sometimes took bad penalties.

Never know, Souray might agree on a small pay check. I wonder if the die hard fans in Montreal and media liked Souray.

Unless Souray take a deal like 4 years / 18 to 20 millions, he\'s gone !

If he hits the free agency market, someone will give him something like 4/25 or 5/28 !
